Starting Off With a School Loan Consolidation

If you are over your head in Student Loans and College Debt, a school loan consolidation may be just what you need. With the prices of going to college constantly going up, most students have no other option but than to take out student loans, and over the years you spend in college, these loans can start racking up. Although you don't have to pay them back while you are still going to school, once you graduate, suddenly you are left with a whole pile of loans that you owe from your college days.

So, you may be wondering what you can do about all of these loans that you have hanging over your head. Well, the best option for you is going to be to find a good school loan consolidation option that will offer you the ability to pay off your college debt in a way that you can handle more easily.

Dealing with all those payments can be a huge hassle, but when you consolidate the loans that you have, you will only need to worry about paying one payment each month. Frequently you can even find a good consolidation loan that will offer you a much lower interest rate as well, so this will help you to save money too.

Unfortunately, instead of going with a school loan consolidation, some graduates decide to take out a personal loan to try to consolidate all of their student loans from college. This is really not a great option, since consolidation loans from a good consolidation company have so much more to offer new graduates.

Often personal loans have much higher interest rates, especially if you have not established any credit yet. You may even have to get a parent to cosign the loan for you as well. You have enough headaches with your recent graduation, finding a job, and getting started in the world, and having a huge pile of student debt hanging over your head is one headache that you can do without.

However, when you decide to go with a school loan consolidation, you'll almost certainly be able to get the program you need, even if you haven't already established any credit while you were going to college. Since it is different from a traditional personal loan, you'll also have better access to low interest rates, which are important as well.

Also, there are more options when you go with a school consolidation loan. Many consolidation loans will allow you to defer your payments for five to six months after graduation and if you go back to school you can defer payments again. You won't find these options when you go with personal loans, and this is a much better option than filing for bankruptcy, which is a really bad way to start your new life after graduation.

So, if you have just graduated and you're really feeling overwhelmed with all the loans that you have hanging over your head, it's time to consider a school loan consolidation. You'll be able to find a loan that will work with your specific needs so you can get started in life with only one loan to worry about paying each month.

A Look At College Education And The Methods Of Financing

College Education And Financing Online For Students

WHEN Student Loan Consolidationwas first introduced in the mid-1980s, it was touted as a much-needed solution for those struggling to pay their debts from college.

Borrowers could combine their Stafford and Plus loans into one payment and lock in the prevailing interest rate — typically, one lower than the average rates that they were previously paying on their other loans.

Times have changed, however, and consolidation is no longer the cheap and attractive option that it used to be. Thanks to the declining federal funds rate and the phasing out of variable-rate loans, consolidating your student loans now will actually cost you more over the lifetime of the loan.

Eventually, consolidation will come back into fashion for variable-rate loans (rates should be much more attractive when they reset in July). But it will probably never again be the least-expensive solution for those with fixed-rate loans.

Hold On To Variable-Rate Stafford & Plus Loans for Now

If you're currently making payments on a variable-rate Stafford or Plus loan, don't consolidate for at least a few months, says Mark Kantrowitz, publisher of FinAid.org, an online source for student financial aid information.

Here's why: Federal loan interest rates are tied to the investment rate of the 91-day Treasury bill. To establish the price of the T-bill, auctions are held on a weekly basis.

The last auction to occur in May of each year sets the base rate for student loans for the upcoming academic year and goes into effect come July 1. Last year's May 29 auction ended with a T-bill investment rate of 4.9%.

On top of the base rate, an additional interest rate gets tacked on to establish the federal student loan rates. For example, a 1.7% rate was added to the 4.9% to create the current interest rate for Stafford loans in the grace period (a grace period lasts up to six months after graduation).

For Stafford loans in the repayment period, which starts once the grace period expires, a 2.3% rate was added to the base rate.

Since July 1 last year, the Federal Reserve has cut the fed-funds rate six times. These cuts have dramatically lowered the T-bill investment rate, which moves in tandem with the fed-funds rate. At the latest auction on March 17, the T-bill investment rate dropped to a mere 1.12%.

On the surface, this appears to be great news for those looking to consolidate. The problem is that any student consolidating now will be stuck paying the higher rate from last year.

Alright, let's Say you have a Stafford loan that's in the repayment period: Your rate is 7.22%. Consolidate now and you'll end up paying a slightly higher 7.25%. Wait until July 1 to consolidate, however, and rates will be near historic lows, says Kantrowitz.

Don't forget that you have a month between the end of May when the base rate is set and July 1 when the new student loan rates go into effect to weigh your options. "If the impossible happened and...the T-bill rate was [rising], you'd...have the month of June to consolidate your loans with the old rates," says Sallie Mae spokesperson Martha Holler.

Don't Consolidate Fixed-Rate Loans

In the past, all student loans came with variable rates. If a borrower had difficulty making their payments, they could consolidate their loans into one low fixed-rate loan.

But as of July 1, 2006, every Stafford and Plus loan now carries a fixed interest rate, making it unnecessary to consolidate in order to lock in a set rate. In fact, borrowers who have fixed-rate loans should never consolidate them.

If they do, they'll end up with a higher interest rate than they're already paying. Under consolidation, the interest rate will be the weighted average of the rates of the loans being consolidated, rounded up to the nearest 1/8 of 1%.

Subsidized Stafford loans taken out for the 2007-08 academic year carry an interest rate of 6.8%; the rate for 2008-09 loans is 6%, and for 2009-10, 5.6%. Unsubsidized loans will still carry a 6.8% fixed rate indefinitely.

For Plus loans sold through the Direct Loan program, rates are fixed at 7.9%. Plus loans dispersed through the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) program carry an 8.5% rate.

Why Computer Surge Protectors are An Absolute Must

Posted by Computer Help
05:02, Monday, June 9, 2008 .. Posted in Computer Maintenance .. Link
Computer surge protectors are a critical component to protecting your computer -- this is a lesson many people learn the hard way. Without one, a PC is  vulnerable to the elements, like lightning storms, and even to unexpected electrical dangers like power spikes that sometimes come from the power grid itself.

I've seen this happen many times with my clients -- one in particular comes to mind: one day, one of those spikes hits their system and boom!

It wasn't pretty, and it took time and money to move all of their data onto a new system. But this time, they got smart and bought a computer surge protector to keep their new system safe.

Computer surge protectors don't cost a whole lot of money, and they can save your oodles of time and tears by keeping your hardware safe and preventing you from spending a ton of money on a brand new PC when there should be plenty of mileage still left on your old one.

Most computer surge protectors come with multiple outlets so that you can plug all of your components into a single, protected strip. Convenient and safe -- those are my new watch words!

To find a computer surge protector, you can go online where you can quickly find a large selection to meet every need and purpose.  You can also find information about how our power supply can affect the performance of your PC, even in more subtle ways. It seems even small surges can wear down your system prematurely and cause it to act up, and bigger spikes can destroy it completely.

Shopping for computer surge protectors can be a bit time consuming because there are many brands and styles to choose from. My advice to anyone searching for one of these units is to figure out how many outlets your need and the amount of protection that you're looking for. This helps narrow your search enough to to find the best computer surge protector for your home or office.

The websites that you can shop at also provide reviews and ratings about the different types so you can see what other users have to say about the products. It's nice to be able to collect this info from the privacy of your home, instead of having to base my choices on what some bored and poorly trained salesperson in a big box electronics store says.

Beyond a computer surge protector, it's an even better idea to use a UPS (like a surge suppressor but with a battery) I've found a couple of good articles with tips on computer ups brownout protection, and answers to questions like "can I be on my computer in a storm?"

If you think that your PC is safe from power surges, think again. Many of my clients have thought the same thing until they lost everything. Don't make the same mistake that they did; shop for your computer surge protectors now and save yourself plenty of grief later.

Understanding Chat Rooms

Many of us have anxiety when talking to new people, something that is perfectly natural.

We may worry if we have something on our faces that they're staring at, if we look good, are making a good first impression, and an endless list worries. Fortunately, in the world we live in today, we can meet and chat with new people without even having to look them in the eye.

Chat rooms are a great way to meet new people that you never thought you could before.

Some of these online meeting places pinpoint their members to a specific category. For example, you can join chat rooms that are specifically about music or for a particular age group so you aren't meeting people younger or older than you.

Even if you aren't looking for love or someone to meet, a chat is a great way to just talk to other people, find out things about them or get their opinion on different things.

A lot of people in their 20s, 30s, 40s and even beyond are on a quest to find the love of their lives. If you are looking for love there are plenty of chats designed just for you.

You can go into chat rooms with the hope that your true love is there. Many rooms are actually geared solely towards certain ages. This is a great resource for someone interested in a partner of a specific age. They simply log into the chat for that demographic and they're ready to start making small talk.

When we are behind a computer screen, we have time to think about the things that we will type. This gets rid of any worries about stuttering or repeating unwanted words due to nerves. You can just relax and talk.

With a keyboard in front of us as our means of communication, it can be easier to get your point across, and if you get "rejected" you can simply leave the room or find someone else to chat with. We become braver and the conversations sometimes take on a risque twist since the embarrassment factor no longer exists.

Chat rooms make it easy for someone who is shy or hesitant to strike up a conversation.

They are great for anyone of any age. Kids can go into safe chats and chat about their favorite video game and make Internet friends all across the globe. Kids should have parental supervision when they are on the computer due to the growing problem of Internet predators.

A lot of children's online rooms for chat have supervisors known as moderators who can kick out any suspicious people, so no matter what chat you go in, you will be safe.

Even if you're just looking for someone to talk about your favorite hobby, your favorite sports team, or the upcoming election, you'll find chat rooms where you'll fit right in.

You never know -- you may even meet a new friend in a chat!

As a student, do you find it hard to repay your student loans? While student loans are great in that you and I will probably not be able to afford a tertiary education without it. On the other hand, it can be difficult to pay the monthly payments on time due to the high interest rate and other external factors which can challenge your wallet.

If you have a difficult time in repaying your student loans, you might want to consider a Direct Student Loan Consolidation.

So what is a direct student loan consolidation?

In essence, it is simply exchanging or consolidating your existing outstanding student loans with higher interest rates for one loan with a more manageable, fixed interest rate. The interest rate is determined by the average of your loans, rounded to the nearest 0.125 per cent.

A direct student loan consolidation is especially useful if you know you are about to default on your monthly student loan payments. A direct student loan consolidation can mean a new start since it is considered a new loan.

When you consolidate your student loans under a new loan, your existing loans will show up on your credit card as paid off, thereby increasing your credit score.

Before getting a direct student loan consolidation, you need to know the types of plans for repaying. There are four major types. You may like to investigate more to consider which is best for your needs.

1. Standard Repayment Plan

Standard Repayment Plan allows you a fixed monthly payment for up to 10 years depending on the amount you owe.

2. Extended Repayment Plan

An extended repayment plan allows you up to 30 years. Obviously, the longer the period, the less amount you need to repay each month. Do note, however that you will end up paying more as a whole if you spread your payment over longer periods of time due to interest rates.

3. Graduated Repayment Plan

Graduated Repayment Plan usually have a repayment period between 12 and 30 years. The main difference between graduated and extended repayment plan is for graduated, the amount of your monthly payment will increase every two years.

4. Income Contingent Repayment Plan

If you have a job, then this plan may be what you are looking for. The income contingent repayment plan set a monthly payment based on your gross annual income. Other factors include your family size and the amount owe. The repayment period is usually 25 years.

A word of caution, if you are close to paying off your student loans, then a direct student loan consolidation may not be suitable for you since you will be paying more due to interest rates over the long term.

However, if you have difficulty in repaying your student loans and it is still years away from being paid off, then a direct student loan consolidation may be the answer. Not only do you pay less interest over the long term but it can improve your credit rating as well.

Just a Few Advantages Of Internet Banking

Posted by Computer Help
01:25, Tuesday, May 27, 2008 .. Posted in People and Computers .. Link
I first discovered the advantages of Internet banking back in the late 1990s. You see, I had a very irregular schedule that did not allow me to always deposit checks in a timely fashion. This could be a big problem when I was getting my paycheck right before rent was due. I was living check to check, so sometimes a delay of a day or two in depositing could be a big issue.

To make things easier, I set up an Internet bank account. One of the advantages of Internet banking is that you can look at it anytime -- day or night. You don't have to wait for when the bank is open. You can check funds, make transfers, and even deposit checks in some cases.

I was able to set up my payroll check to deposit directly into the bank, and I could get online and verify that it had been deposited whenever I needed to.

Of course, I never realized the full advantages of Internet banking until I became a businessman.

In college, I only had to deal with a few home utilities bills and that sort of thing. In the long run, none of it really mattered that much. Worst comes to worst, I would pay a bill a little  late or not be able to pay over the Internet and have to send it out in the mail instead. This was a hassle, but wouldn't have been the end of the world.

When you run your own business, however, it's really different. There are so many different things to keep track of that the difference between online banking and traditional financial management can be the difference between a few e-mails and a giant pile of paperwork.

When you count month after month, day after day, this adds up to quite a bit of work that you save by banking online.

Another advantage of Internet banking is that your resources and records are much more accessible. A lot of people used to worry about not having a paper trail when they bank online, but in reality this isn't the case.

With modern Internet banking, in fact, it is just the opposite. At the touch of a button, you can get a printed record of any transaction you want. You can keep your own records in an offsite backup account, guaranteeing that even if your computer crashes, you will be able to access your financial records.

Considering your financial records can be one of the single most critical things in your business, and given the way a computer's hard drive can fail without notice, this can be one of the greatest advantages of Internet banking in my opinion.

Ever since the 1970s, the world of video and arcade games has been huge. It began with simple stuff like Pacman, Asteroids, Centipede and Pong.

These days you can immerse yourself in much more advanced graphics such as Halo, GTA IV and Age of Conan. It's absolutely amazing how much this entertainment arena has changed over the years, going from simple, 3-color graphics showing fairly small two dimensional maps to nearly photo-realistic three dimensional worlds that seem to go on forever.

But one aspect always remains the same. Kids and countless adults continue to love and enjoy a variety of video games. The cool part is that now you can download free computer games right off the web! Who doesn't like free video games?

You have a computer right? Well, if you're like most people, you spend a good part of your day on a PC or Mac. This is just the norm in this day and age.

So many people work on a computer of some kind day-in and day-out.

But did you know you can download free computer games any time you choose?  It's just one of the countless perks provided by the Internet.

Now, let's examine the numerous benefits of downloading free computer games. First of all, video games are generally expensive.

I don't care if you invested in a Wii, Sony Playstation 3 or X-Box 360, the video games themselves can break the bank. Forking out 50 or 60 bucks seems utterly ridiculous. That must be like a 500,000 percent mark-up.

Despite this, people buy these expensive video games every day. What they may not know is that you can download free computer games online too. This is actually a great way to save some cash. Especially if you have small children.

Don't introduce them to Playstation or X-Box. Simply download free computer games online and show them to your kids. They can literally play whenever they choose and there are games to suit all age groups.

Maybe you have no clue where to begin when it comes to downloading computer games on the web for free. No problem! Check out these nifty websites that offer all you need to know; takegame.com, games2download.com and retro64.com.

These websites are excellent and can easily assist you with attaining free computer games on a whim. Stop wasting your hard-earned money and start downloading for free.

How to Chose The Best Computer Speakers For You

Posted by Computer Help
08:37, Monday, May 19, 2008 .. Posted in Music and Computers .. Link
As a computer trainer, I get asked a lot of computer questions, and one question I get asked is which are the best computer speakers to buy.

I succeed in my business by trying to give honest answers and not automatically directing people to the most high-tech and sophisticated audio there is. As an honest businessman, I have to say there is no simple answer.

If you are an ordinary user, the best computer speakers for you might just be the ones your computer came with. Most laptops come with computer speakers that have a pretty high level of fidelity. What most don't have, unfortunately, is much bass.

If you are only using your speakers for casually putting music on in the background, a little bit of gaming, or voice over IP, what you have is probably just fine. If you want a little bit more body, you can add a woofer to fill out the sound a little bit, but there's no need to spend a lot of money on a sophisticated audio setup.

On the other hand, different people have different tastes. In gamer magazines, the best multimedia computer speakers reviews consistently go to speakers with a lot of bass. It seems that gamers really like low-end power -- no doubt to stimulate the impact of explosions hitting nearby, or the growl of hideous monsters in some strange underground dungeon.

If you find big bass to be thrilling, by all means go out to your local audio store and invest in some bass. Just don't make the mistake that most people do by assuming that more powerful speakers are automatically better.

Having too much bass without enough mid and high range can actually distort the sound of music.

Of course, if you are a serious music listener, a great way to find the best computer speakers Is to look them up in consumer reports. You can spend as much as you want on high quality audio components, and you are generally rewarded for the money you invest.

Nonetheless, even if it is supposed to be the best computer speaker out there, don't buy it without listening to it first.

Some speakers, for example, have too warm a sound for some users. Others feel a little bit tinny. Different audio speakers are directed towards different listeners, so there really is no one best choice.

The best computer speakers, like the best music, is a matter of opinion.

Portable Media - Changing the Way We See The World

Posted by Computer Help
03:11, Saturday, May 17, 2008 .. Posted in Future Trends In Computers and Technology .. Link
It seems everything is portable these days, even your music and movies.

Movie night used to be something that families did once a week, and music came from the radio. Towards the end of the 20th century, CD players and tape decks made music more portable, but they could still be bulky and hard to use at times. When it came to movies and television, you had to be at home to enjoy.

Those days are gone, as some of the amazing portable media available today makes it seem like the future is already here.

Of course, these days, when it comes to music, everybody wants MP3 players. They are smaller than anything that has ever been out before, and weigh next to nothing. Because of digital technology, these tiny pieces of portable media can carry hundreds of different songs with no CD or tape required.

The music is simply downloaded from a computer onto the player and it is ready to go. If you look around on any given day, you will see all type of people with this form of portable media.

Cell phones are not just for phone calls any longer, as they're yet another form of portable media. It depends on the phone you have, your service provider, and what type of service you pay for of course, but many have found their cell phones to be about a lot more than just phone calls.

Many have easy access to the Internet, and you can even watch television and movies on a phone. Of course, this isn't always practical, but it certainly works when nothing else is around. You can even play games on some phones, and that can take up a lot of time while stuck somewhere with time to kill.

Another type of portable media is the DVD player. These days, they can be carried around, or they can come installed in new cars and vans.

These are great for children when they are in the car for long periods of time, or when they are away from home visiting someone who might not have a DVD player for them to use. This is probably not the end of what people can come up with in the way of portable media.

Considering the speed that media is coming down in price -- thanks to something called Moore's Law -- I imagine pretty soon we'll have comfortable, lightweight glasses or sunglasses that are a complete personal home theater, storing dozens or even hundreds of movies without being any more heavy or bulky than a normal pair of glasses.

Pretty soon, the days of having to go home to see your favorite TV show, or to check your email may be long gone. Instead, you can have anything you need at any time, anywhere you may go.

Could Computer Addiction Be Affecting Your Life?

Posted by Computer Help
09:30, Friday, May 16, 2008 .. Posted in People and Computers .. Link
Internet access is cheaper and faster than ever before, and that means more and more people can afford to have one or more computers with Internet access in their homes. Computers are great for working from home, and you may not be able to do so without one.

Not everyone who has a computer needs it for work at home though, and most use it for other things. Many spend hour after hour online, and this can cause problems with the dynamic of any family. Computer addiction is a very real thing, and it has caused a lot of problems in even the most close-knit families and relationships.

Computer addiction is something a lot of people don't take seriously, but it can be a very real thing. Some come home from work and barely glance in the direction of their spouse before they log on and check their email. This is something that starts small and can end with one spouse spending all of their free time in front of their computer screen.

As you can imagine, this type of computer addiction leaves the other spouse feeling neglected, could even lead to divorce if something does not change.

Adults are not the only ones who can fall into a computer addiction. There are a lot of  teens who spend more and more of their time online instead of hanging out with friends, playing sports, and being with their families. Some of them play games, but many more of them have a addiction to computer instant messaging, message boards, and sites like MySpace.

Not only are they not interacting with real people in real life, they are neglecting homework and forgetting what it is like to be sociable with others that they meet face to face.

If you are spending more time looking at your computer screen than sitting on the couch watching a movie with your spouse or your entire family, you may want to consider the possibility that you have a computer addiction.

Try coming home from work one day without touching your computer to see how it makes you feel. If you discover that you can't stay away from it, can't stop thinking about it, or start feeling like you're missing a huge part of your life, you may want to consider whether you have a computer addiction.

This is when you might want to take some time to think about what really means the most to you, and then make the changes you need to make. You don't have to give up surfing online or playing games, but there is always something to be said about doing things in moderation, since this can lead to a lot more harmony in your home.

Understanding How To Download Music Videos

Posted by Computer Help
10:06, Thursday, May 15, 2008 .. Posted in Music and Computers .. Link
I've always loved music -- no matter what I am doing, I usually have some playing in the background. I like all kinds of music. I like rock, pop, jazz, and even some classical.

Nonetheless, sometimes the music alone is not enough to convey the whole message. That is why I like to download music videos.

Music videos are an art form, if you ask me. When they are done right, the music and the images go together to tell a story or create a seamless and beautiful scene.

Even though MTV doesn't seem to show videos as often as they used to, with all the downloadable music videos on the Internet you can still watch them whenever you want to.

There are plenty of different ways to do music video downloads. One of the easiest ways is to download music videos from YouTube. You Tube is great because it is so convenient and so fast. Basically, you can find anything with one quick and simple search.

After that, it will "stream" the music video directly to your computer (streaming is kind of like watching a TV broadcast instead of a DVD -- it comes to you "live" as it's playing, instead of being completely saved on your computer first). Nothing can be easier. There are, however, some disadvantages to this method of downloading a music video.

The biggest one, of course, is the low resolution, or picture quality. Almost everything shown on You Tube is at an extremely low level of resolution. That is what makes it such a fast way to download music video, but the problem is that a lot of the details that make the music videos so nice the first place are gone.

That is why a lot of more serious fans download music videos off of some other service. There are several other ways to do it. If you don't mind paying some money, there are literally dozens of sites that will let you download music videos online. Usually, you pay a subscription fee, or maybe you pay per download. Either way, all you have to do is enter your information and you can download music videos to your hearts' content

If you want to, you can always download free music videos from bit torrent. This can take a little more time than any of the other methods I have discussed, but it is worth it. Basically, if you look long enough and are willing to put in the time, you can download anything from bit torrent.

You can download games, programs, movies, and of course, music videos. It is a pretty low risk way to download, but you should still take some precautions. You should always scan the files for viruses before opening them, and don't go too crazy with the downloads or your ISP might notice what you're up to.

But as long as you're careful, you'll be fine, and enjoying your ability to download music videos!

Understanding the Basic Computer Term "Driver"

In this article, I'm going to explain a computer term that, like so many computer terms, isn't very well understood by most people. And in many cases, isn't understood at all.

Of course, as always, remember that's not a criticism -- if you didn't understand what a driver was before this, it's just because it was never explained to you the right way before.

Let's see what I can do to fix that.

A driver is a special type of software that's needed to get different pieces of hardware to work right with your computer.

Didn't make sense yet? Bear with me.

First off, just to make sure we're all on the same page, let me briefly explain the difference between "hardware" and "software".

It's actually pretty simple -- "hardware" refers to all of the physical pieces of equipment, like your mouse, your computer's screen (or monitor), the hard drive, etc.

"Software" is all of the parts of the computer that you can't really see or touch. Software would include things like Microsoft Word, your email program, Windows or the Mac OS, plus all of your personal files like letters, photos, music, and more.

One way to think about it is like this: hardware is like your brain, the physical part of your body, while software is like your mind or your thoughts -- the non-physical part of yourself.

Software runs on hardware, just like your thoughts "run on" your brain.

Make sense? Now let's talk more specifically about drivers.

Here's the easy way to think about what a driver is. Imagine that every piece of hardware, including your printer, your mouse, and so on, speaks a different language.
So one speaks French, another one speaks Italian, another one Cantonese, etc.

So when you plug in a new printer and turns it on, your computer says "hi" and the printer replies in a foreign language the computer doesn't understand.

So it needs an interpreter.

And when I say interpreter, I mean just like in the real world, like if a foreign diplomat comes to the country but doesn't speak the local language. They need an interpreter to help them communicate with the locals.

That, basically speaking, is what a driver is -- an interpreter that helps your computer talk to a specific piece of equipment. And (generally speaking) you need a different interpreter for each piece of equipment that you hook up to the computer.

Make sense?

Now in some cases, the driver may be "preinstalled" on your computer (in other words, the computer already has the interpreter ready and waiting in case it's needed) and in other cases, it needs to either be installed from a CD, or downloaded off the Internet, and then installed on the computer.

But either way, the computer needs that driver before it can talk to the printer or whatever other type of device you may have hooked up to the computer.

Hope that makes sense.

10 College Admissions Tips for College-Bound Students

Posted by Debt Relief
07:37, 2008-Apr-20 .. Posted in Education .. Link

Fact number one is that the student who gets admitted to the greatest number of colleges is not necessarily the winner of this "game". Fact number two is that neither is the student who is admitted to the most prestigious college or the student offered the greatest number of Scholarships.  Fact number three is that everyone can win this game. Everyone.

That's because winning means winding up at a college or university in which you'll be both happy and successful. And, it's not that hard. Below are ten tips to help. If you follow them all (especially #8 and # 10), you can be free of the anxiety so many students experience in the college selection process. In fact, you may find the College search process interesting and even a bit of fun.

Be sure to take the most challenging high school courses you can handle. Don’t take the easy way out (as many students do, especially in their senior year). Strong academic preparation makes you a better candidate for admission and greatly improves your chances for success in college.

Take either the ACT or SAT as a high school sophomore, if only to practice, get on some college mailing lists, and determine your relative strengths and weaknesses as compared with students throughout the country, students against whom you may be competing for college admission. Take both the ACT and SAT, after preparing diligently for them, in your junior and senior years.

Before making a list of colleges to consider, spend some time putting together a list of the criteria most important to you (location, size, academic programs, campus environment, co-curricular activities, etc.). If you are thoughtful and thorough in this phase of the process, it will be much easier for you to create your “colleges to explore” list, the next step in your college.

When you begin putting together your “colleges to explore” list, consider both your college choice criteria and the academic profiles of students most likely to be admitted to each. Keep in mind that you do not have to be at the top of all the listed ranges in the admitted student profiles…that’s the good news. The bad news is that even being at the top of every range is no guarantee of admission, particularly at the very most selective institutions. Hey, who said this would be easy?

On the other hand, don’t panic. Most colleges (80% +) admit more students than they deny, and there really is a college or university for (almost) everybody.

Do not eliminate colleges from your “colleges to explore” list because of their “sticker price”, as financial aid (available in many forms) may greatly reduce your actual cost of attendance. More on this later.

Do not count on activities to get you into college. They may be a “tip” factor in your favor, but unless you have exceptional talent in athletics, music, etc., they will not “save the day” for you. Strength of preparation (coursework), grades, and standardized (ACT or SAT) scores carry far more weight. And, understand that colleges are generally more impressed by real commitment to a few co-curricular activities than limited participation in many.

Do not rule out colleges whose names you do not recognize. Attend college fairs, meet with college representatives visiting your school, read the literature you receive in the mail, talk to your counselor, and use the many great resources available online. Explore lots of options and seek information aggressively. If you snooze, you lose.

When you make your “colleges to apply to” list, don’t be afraid to include a few “reach” schools, but be realistic about your chances. And, include at least two very carefully chosen “safety” schools. “Safety” or “fall back” schools are colleges you are confident will admit you, institutions you will be able to afford without hardship, and (most of all) colleges you would be happy to attend. Take great care to choose your safety schools well, because if you do you’ll be you'll be “bulletproof”.

Visit as many colleges as possible, ask lots of questions, spend as much time as possible at each institution, and, if possible, have your family accompany you. Your family knows you better than anyone else, thus their observations and opinions may prove very helpful to you (even if you agree on nothing else)

Never attend a college or university you have not visited. In fact, experienced educators often say this is rule #1. Rule #2, by the way, is that there are no exceptions to rule #1. There are countless stories about students whose visits saved them from bad decisions. Conversely, there are just as many stories about folks who made bad decisions after choosing to attend colleges and universities they failed to visit.

Financing Your Education

Your Future Is In Your Hands

One of the most important decisions you can make in your life is how to pay for your EducationEducation as you may know is a very big thing for all of us.  It is the key to our success.  But, often times this “big thing” is ignored because of financial problems.  Thanks to some schools and institutions out there that financing your education can now be made possible.   However, just as you investigate which schools have the best programs for you; it is still necessary that you gather information about how best to finance your education and your future.

Invest While You Can, But Be Careful!

It is often said that your Education is a major investment in yourself.  It is an investment of both time and money.  You may be spending your limited resources now in the hope that you will realize a somewhat positive outcome on your investment in the future.  It is best that you consider the time as well as money you will invest in your Education, but along with this, the personal and professional goals you’ve set for yourself must also be given attention.   Then, it is now time to make the best investment you can.   There are some lending companies or persons you know who will support you where you can borrow even just the minimum amount necessary to fulfill your Education aims.

It is through this way that you will realize your financial and career goals as it maximizes the net return on your investment. Perhaps it is also necessary that you consider some preparations for the financial aspects of your school, just as you are preparing for admission to and enrollment in the school of your desire.   Many experts often say that even if your parents may be willing to carry your financial paperwork or any financial burdens there may be while you are in school, it is still best that you understand it too and become at least an equal participant in Financing your Education.

In case you don’t, you may find that financing your education can sometimes become overly confusing and complicated.   Note that while you are in school and even after you left, you will be the one signing the promissory notes for any loans you borrow in order to Finance your Education.  This just implies that you yourself will be legally responsible for your loans.  Thus, understanding the terms and conditions of the loans you borrow will help you get out from any problem during the repayment period.

Questions to Ask Before Your Borrow

Before you borrow, it is necessary that you get answers to the most possible, important questions as you plan the Financing of your Education.  The necessary questions to consider are the following:

1.  What should I be doing now to get ready for meeting the cost of my education?

2.  Are there eligibility requirements that I must meet in order for me to obtain support for my degree?  If so, what are they?

3.  What specific financing alternatives or programs are available to me at the school where I plan to apply?

4.  How to apply for financial support and what applications are needed?

5.  Is there a right time to apply for financial aid?  When should it be and what are the application deadlines?

6.  Will my parents be expected to provide any of their financial information or contribute to the cost of my Education?

7.  What they will do with the information I and my parents provide?

8.  What necessary and unnecessary points should I know about the assistance I am offered like student loans, grants, or work study?

9.  Is there any move that I can take to lessen the amount I have to borrow, yet still attend the school of my choice?

10.  What do I need to consider or do once I arrive on campus to minimize how much I borrow?

11.  What choices will I get for working while attaining my degree?

12.  What possible impacts will the loans I borrow have on me after I graduated from college?

As you may notice, some of the above mentioned questions are general.  They apply to any school you might attend.   However, others are more specific to the programs, policies and procedures of every school you may be considering.  So, what is best to do with these questions aside from seeking for answers is to evaluate these issues as you explore your financial options, in spite of where you plan to attend school.

It is somehow worthy to note that Financing your Education requires a collaboration involving yourself, your family, as well as the school you attend.  Your lender may also play a great part on it.   Answering such questions should provide you the information you will need to make well-informed choices about how to finance your Education, other than how to make the most of your education investment.

Where to Seek  Answers?

One of your most important resources to use in answering the above mentioned questions is probably the financial aid administrators at the schools you are considering.   However, there are also some consult publications from funding organizations out there where you can seek for answers.  Examples of them could be the state governments, lenders, and scholarship granting organizations.  Several financial aid guidebooks are also available today from your local bookstore.

Perhaps another valuable and updated source of answers to such questions is the Internet.  As you may know, many schools today have their own websites, which often cover information about the financial aid.    Most of the lenders and other funding organizations even have websites as well.  Typically, they offer information about financing your degree, the importance of good credit, managing your student loans while in school, and even repaying your Student Loans.   There are also some interactive calculators online these days to help you plan your in-school and out-school budgets.

These calculators are even useful when it comes to projecting the cost of your Student Loans.
Lastly, several websites that have been established by government agencies and other organizations to aid students with Financing their Education are
now accessible.  As often said, they may be a good place to start your search.

How Much Should You Borrow?

you should first take an organized step and identify how much you will really need to borrow. There are actually several factors associated with the dollar amount you should borrow.  Usually, the amount will greatly depend on the cost of attendance as established by your school; on the student loan limits established by the federal government and other student loan lenders; on your outstanding financial commitments like car loans or mortgages; other resources you may have such as savings accounts; and on the amount of the debt you can afford to repay once you leave school.  Also note that the sum of these parts equals an educated estimate of your student loan amount.

So you’ve found answers to those questions, do you?  If so, it is necessary to note that before you place and strike your pen on any promissory notes,

Factors to Consider for Borrowing

Under the accepted standards of borrowing student loans, it is stressed that you can borrow up to the cost of attendance, as determined by your school, less other financial assistance you might be receiving.   Other financial assistance refers to grants, work-study, and scholarships.   And, the cost of attendance typically involves tuition, books, fees, room and board, and other miscellaneous living expenses.

Also, the cost of attendance as determined by your school has figures that are meant to apply to a wide group of students.  Oftentimes, you may not need to borrow as much as your school allows.   Note that it is best to borrow the minimum amount possible so that you can lessen your overall financial obligation later.  Nevertheless, if you find that you really need a student loan amount that is more than the school has allotted, you actually have the right to appeal the decision.  But, this is permitted as long as you do not surpass the maximum amount as established and maintained by the federal regulations.

If you prefer to consider borrowing student loans to finance your education, just expect that some of the lenders these days have borrowing limits placed on student loans.  For instance, the federal government places annual and aggregate borrowing restrictions on federal student loans, and the aggregate limit is usually the total amount that every student can borrow in the span of his or her education.   Given this fact, it is then necessary to examine and evaluate the terms of every loan you plan to take on for the annual and aggregate loan restrictions.

Aside from that, carefully and honestly assess your current financial status, including any financial commitments you have made before entering the school of your own choice.  Understanding the repayment obligations of every commitment you’ve made is the key here.  Note that over time you will be responsible for these prior obligations in addition to any education debt you take on, and your education loans are not given to cover these prior obligations you have.

Finally, consider the realistic determination of your future income.  You can perform some research on the current job market and start salaries in the area you plan to pursue.  Just note that you will be paying for your education with your future income.   So, when choosing a student loan program, be sure to do some investigations on the loans that offer you alternative repayment plans which can assist you in managing your payments, especially early on in your own career.

Conclusion

As mentioned, student loans can be a valuable investment, but they are also an important obligation that needs to be considered.  In order for you to ensure a successful student loan repayment, you must make sure that you approach borrowing carefully and thoughtfully.  This must also be coupled with being realistic in your own budget as well as salary projections.

Credit Reports: What They Mean To You And Your Debts

Posted by Fix-Credit

Credit reports are often regarded with dread, especially by those who have entered turbulent financial waters. But reality is never your enemy, even when it is unpleasant. In order to promote financial health, and resolve any debt problems you may have, it's essential to have the best information possible about your credit status. That information is found - both by the lender and, more importantly, by you - in your credit reports.

Those reports are maintained - at least in the U.S. - chiefly by the three major credit reporting agencies: Equifax (PO Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374; www.equifax.com), Experian (PO Box 2002, Allen TX  75013, www.experian.com) and TransUnion (PO Box 2000, Chester, PA 19022; www.transunion.com).

The reports contain a multi-year history of your credit cards, home loans and other debt. They also record any late payments that occurred and how late they were, 30-day past due, 60-day past due, etc. The reports will list any current and old address, and often your phone number and social security number.

That information is readily available to any qualified party - a bank, a mortgage lender, a credit card issuing company and certain others during legal proceedings. But, though the companies all genuinely try to maintain accurate records, the reports may contain errors.

They may list loans as active that have been paid off. They may list current Student Loans you had problems paying long ago. And, they may fail to list payments made to make up overdue amounts. Often, this isn't sloppiness on the part of the credit bureaus but simply a reflection of timing and other common human errors in keeping records. The world may be computerized, but those databases still don't always communicate effectively between companies using different systems.

The only thing an individual can do about this - out of self-protection, if nothing else - is to get copies from all three agencies and review them thoroughly. Make a note of any errors, establish proof of the error, then send a registered letter with the proof to the agency asking them to correct the data.

Thanks to recent legislation, you can obtain one free copy of your credit report per year. There are numerous ways to do that by filling out a form online or calling. One way is to go to: annualcreditreport.com.

On a more positive note, having the information at your fingertips allows you to develop a debt-free plan for your future. Understanding your past credit history is the first step in creating that plan.

Review your history and note any current overdue amounts. Clear those up first, as quickly as possible. One method is to pay off any smaller outstanding amounts first. That frees up funds to be used on the next larger outstanding amount. Working your way up, you will eventually begin to see light at the end of the tunnel.

A Look At Consolidation Loans For Debt Relief

Posted by Debt Relief
09:13, 2008-Mar-30 .. Posted in Debt Relief .. Link

It’s one thing to take out loan after loan, or use your credit card time after time without thinking of the consequences, but what happens when things come to a head and you find that you are literally buried under a mountain of debt? Well, things can either get very ugly, or you can take one of the simpler ways out of the whole mess and look at debt consolidation loans to help you.

Of course, nothing is as simple as it seems, and if Consolidation Loans were the best thing since sliced bread, then there’s a better than even chance that more people who are struggling to find their way out of debt would be jumping on that particular bandwagon. Since this is clearly not the case, there will be a few cons to add that pros list of why you should go looking for Consolidation Loans.

So to begin with, if you are thinking about finding a Consolidation Loan to help you get out of debt, there are a few things that you need to consider first of all, and the first one is, is it worth it?

You want to get out of debt, yes, but do you really want to consolidate all your loans into one and then get out an, admittedly lower interest, loan against that? Could you do better without consolidating your loans, and could you pay it all off faster if you stick with a sounder debt management plan than your usual method of chuck-the-bill-in-the-drawer?  Are Consolidation Loans the right choice for you, or will you get into more trouble that you’re already in?

The answer to that last question, is a resounding “Yes!” if you go with the very first company you come across that does consolidation loans, without taking the time out to look around for a better deal. It’s very easy to start panicking and thinking that you simply don’t have the luxury of time to go shopping around for a good firm that specializes in Consolidation Loans, but this is the very last thing that you should be doing.

No matter how pressed for time you might think you are, by going with the first loan consolidation firm you come across, you could be doing yourself a serious disservice, not mention getting into hotter water than you’re already in now. For instance, you could be going from the frying pan into the fire by agreeing to get a secured loan in order to pay off your unsecured loans. This is not sound money-management sense.

You need to stop and think about why you are looking at consolidation loans to begin with. It’s all too easy to become sidetracked and go off on a tangent all the while thinking that you’re going down the right path, when instead you’re heading for deeper waters. So take the time to shop around and find a loan consolidation firm that will give you what you want and need, don’t take unnecessary risks

Tips on Choosing the Best Debt Management Service

Posted by Debt Relief
09:11, 2008-Mar-30 .. Posted in Debt Relief .. Link

So, you have debt problems and you would like to put an end to it. You are now ready to pick up the phone and call your chosen debt management service provider. But before you do that, please read on because you needed to be guided accordingly as to which debt management service provider to select.

1. Choose a reputable company. Debt management services are being offered left and right, in and on of the internet. Before you head on and just select out of pure gut and instinct, try to do a simple background check on the service provider. You wanted to be with the people who will genuinely help.

 2. Choose the company which employs the experts. Debt management services are more one on one counseling. You should be dealing with a real expert rather than somebody who just poses to be one. In order for you to be guided accordingly, you have to be with the best people.

3. Choose the company with a good track record. How many people are actually helped by the company? Are its clients satisfied with the service they got? Are the services effective? These are questions that you might need positive answers to so that you’ll be able select the best company possible.

4. Choose the company that offers personalized service. There are instances that a certain debt management service is not applicable to you. You have to make sure that the debt management service provider looks deeper into your personal needs and requirements and not just what they wanted for you.

5. Choose the debt management service provider that will effectively take you towards debt-free living. This is your main goal: to be free of debt for life. You got to be sure that you and your service provider have the same goal. Only through that you will be able to achieve full freedom against debts.

6. Choose the company that helps more than anything. If your debt management service provider is more into making profit than helping, then that isn't a good mix. The profit and the helping aspect should both be on the same level so that they won’t conflict with each other.

These are the things that you should consider when selecting a debt management service provider. Remember, your chance to be free of debts is in their hands. Both of you should be helping each other.
