I am a white woman who is married to a black man. We have four beautiful children together and we have been together for almost twenty years. Now many people have questions about interracial dating and interracial marriages that they ask me all of the time and the same with my husband. And all we can tell them is that is different for each interracial couple.

As it goes in my family we do not really acknowledge the difference in people by their skin color or their race. We are all just human people. Although sometimes we will separate some people into the really stupid group of people that inhabit the world but other than that we try to keep any kind of segregation out of our home and our lives. That is all well and good in the home but when we step outside into the real world of a very diverse place with many people having all kinds of opinions about interracial dating it is a whole other scene.

I have personally found that there are many people that really do not acknowledge any difference in race or skin color. Perhaps my family and I draw these people and their energy to us by believing and acting in the same manner. However I have come across many people who are quiet racists. These are the people that really do not have an opinion when you are in front of them or in a close proximity but they all have their racists’ views whether big or small. Even though many people say that they do not have an opinion about interracial dating they may actually have quite a big opinion but just do not feel like sharing it with you.

As part of an interracial couple I and my husband and my children have all encountered some kind of racisms whether it was a hasty or mean remark or a stare that lingered a little too long and did not say anything kind in it and this is from all different kinds of races of people. People of all colors and creeds have their opinions and some people are not afraid to voice them. When these incidents occur my family tries to wish these people some kind of happiness in their life so they can stop hating other people.

I have to say that from my generation to my children’s generation there has been a huge amount of change that has occurred. And of course the same can be said for our grandparent’s and our parent’s generations. Year after year the line of race seems to lessen a little bit. There are of course people who hold onto certain beliefs and ideas and that is there business, for we can not change the world all at once. But if we change the opinion of one person it has increased their knowledge of interracial dating and perhaps they will show someone else one day.

My children are products of an interracial marriage and they are happy children. There is no discussion of if they are white or if they are black. They are who they are and they are wonderful. My interracial children have friends of many races and those children are all open minded to different races. Perhaps open minded is not the right phrase because they do not even seem to have an idea of how things were forty years ago. All they know is that they are all children and they are all happy regardless of their race and the race of their parents. Does race even matter anymore? When will people stop saying interracial dating and just call it dating? Perhaps on that day there will be a lot more understanding in the world.
