It Doesn't Have To Be New YearsOctober 28, 2007

Skells and low lifes hate noise, because it throws off their rhythm.

But noise is often a lifesaver, and having a screecher, personal alarm, or electronic whistle is a smart move on your part. I wouldn't hesitate to say that these simple tools have saved thousands of people from being robbed, mugged, and much worse, over the years.

Think about it from the skells point of view. He's lurking in a building in the shadows, and he wants to attack quickly without any interference. He sneaks up, grabs you, and you set off a 130 decibel alarm that definitely is not music to his ears.

Most of the time the skell will bolt, and very quickly. He doesn't want witnesses, and he certainly doesn't want to attract security, or the police. This is a good scenario for you, but you really need something else to back your play, like pepper spray, or a stun gun, or both. If you have space, use the spray. In close quarters use the stun gun.

Always strike quickly, and then disappear. Get to a safe place and call security and the police. Have them escort you to your home or apartment. Let them take a look around to make sure the mutt is gone.

If your boss asks you what you want for Christmas, put personal security products on your list. Suggest he outfit the whole office with tools instead of that tired old turkey. The more people carrying personal security products the safer we are.

If you're prepared, you'll never be surprised.
