The Ugg boot controversy.

Posted at 11:50 on 14 April 2008

Ugg boots are some of the most trendy and coolest boots that are on the market today.  There is also a lot of controversy about Ugg boots.  There are two different types of controversy that surrounds Ugg Boots and one was a very serious issue that arose a few years back and the other is of a much lighter note.  Ugg boots have had a very long and interesting history all their own and every part of it makes the ugg boot what it is today.

First of all the Ugg boot is a boot that is made out of natural sheep skin and has been around in Australia for many, many, many years.  Australian people started wearing these Uggs as they are now known hundreds of years ago and they have grown over the years into what they are today.  The main reason that the Australian people would wear these ugg boots is because of the material that they were made of.  They kept your feet warm and dry when it was cold and rainy outside and when it was hot and dry out it would keep your feet cool.  The natural fibers of the boot would help in these areas.

Now after many, many years of people wearing these boots and calling them Uggs a company came along and decided that they wanted to capitalize on the name uggs.  So they created their boot company and tried to trademark the name uggs.  This is the controversy that started. Many people felt that it was wrong and illegal to try and take the name of uggs when an entire country was using the name.  The company wanted anyone who was using the phase ugg boots to stop using it or they would threaten to sue them.  There were many small shops and stores that would sell the original ugg boots and they would use the name uggs to do that.  These smaller shops and stores fought back against the company and took it to court.  It was later ruled that the larger company would not be able to trademark the uggs name and the smaller shops and stores would still be allowed to use the phrase.  That was a very big controversy in Australia for quite some time.  After it was finally worked out there was still some very bad blood between some people and it left a bad feeling for many that were involved directly or indirectly.

The other controversy is a much smaller and lighter one than the big court battle that occurred. This one is just between people who really love their ugg boots and those people who absolutely hate any uggs that they see.  People who love their ugg boots love them because they are so very comfortable and they are trendy.  These people also accept the fact that they are not the most attractive piece of footwear that was ever made but that is how they got their name, ugg is short for ugly.  They accept this fact but because of the comfort level of ugg boots their owners truly do not care about how they look. And in fact they find that they are rather nice looking after awhile.  The people who hate uggs are just people who have probably never worn these wonderful boots.  They just base their opinion on the fact of how the ugg boots look.  That is their only point.  That fact and also that so many people wear them now that they have become a “trendy” item.  And these people tend to not like trendy items.  So as you see this controversy is a much more humorous one than the court battle and all in all the majority of people love their ugg boots and are so very happy to have them.
