Professional Photographers Need To Define Their Niche
Posted on 15 November 2008 at 03:28
About half of all professional photographers established in the UK work in what is known as general practice, or high street photography. They carry out a variety of work depending on the requirements of their immediate local community. They are usually situated in a shop or studio on the high street and the nature of their business will depend to a large extent on the location.
The work is likely to be a mixture of social, commercial, advertising and industrial photography for the general public, local businesses and industry. A lot of a general practitioner’s work can be described as social photography. Many will have a portrait studio on the premises, although it is becoming more commonplace and popular to shoot social portraits in the client’s home or workplace. However, the bread and butter work for most general practitioners tends to be wedding photography or other family celebrations, including christenings and graduation ceremonies.
This work is increasingly coming under threat by the budding amateur photographer, as family and friends are asked to take pictures of the wedding or whatever occasion it may be. The advent of the digital camera made this even more so and it is up to the general practitioner on the high street to market himself as a specialist Leeds wedding photographer who can offer a superior product and service. They should highlight that as a wedding photographer they can deliver the whole package - the convenience of having a professional at your wedding organizing all the photographs, speed of service, and style of presentation to include the finished album.
Why Should The Banks Get Away With It?
Posted on 8 November 2008 at 03:03
Most countries are currently experiencing a severe economic downturn, partly due to the reckless behavior of the major banks. As a result several governments have decided to rescue many high street banks with taxpayers' money in order to avoid the potential collapse of the banking system.
So how have these less than competent businesses responded to this embarrassing handout - surely by passing some of this loot on to hardpressed small businesses and struggling customers? Well not exactly - true to form these denizens of the commercial world seem to be squeezing their long suffering customers even tighter. Let's face it, why help a small business to survive the impending recession when you could force it to close and lose the bulk of your investment instead? Doh, is it any wonder these idiots got themselves into such a mess in the first place?
What's even more frustrating is the lack of a voice for those suffering most. Our governments are too concerned about bolstering the institutions so don't expect them to fight your corner. Try approaching your bank looking for help or to complain about shoddy treatment and see how far you get. That's why it's refreshing to see the new You Greedy Bankers site that promises to develop into a voice for the ordinary Joe and Jane. It might not force the banks to treat us with respect but at least we'll have somewhere to vent our frustrations.
Ryanair USA Ticket Prices Set to Fall
Posted on 3 November 2008 at 12:21
Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary today paves the way for a massive reduction in the cost of travel from Europe to the United States. He will reveal the companys plan to reduce Ryanair USA ticket prices to €10. The €10 flights, which could begin by the end of next year, would be available for those booking early and will most likely cover the routes from Stansted and Dublin airports to New York, Florida, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston.
Airport taxes will of course be added to the base ticket prices and Ryanair will continue to make its profits from duty free sales and increasing charges for food and in-flight entertainment. At this point there is no indication that the new pricing policy will apply to return journeys from the United States.
Sony Battery Recall
Posted on 31 October 2008 at 15:19
Sony today confirmed it is recalling 100,000 battery packs due to safety concerns about overheating. The batteries are used in notebooks from Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell. Still, Sony is by far the manufacturer primarily affected by the design flaw: This follows on from the company's decision last month to recall 438,000 of its Vaio laptops due to the same issue.
According to a Sony representative, “machine settings were adjusted more frequently than usual on one line from October 2004 to June 2005, and we believe that a combination of such adjustments may have affected the quality of cells in certain manufacturing lots, creating the potential for such cells to overheat on rare occasion”.
The U.S. government yesterday announced a voluntary recall of 35,000 Sony batteries and Sony later confirmed it would recall an additional 65,000 batteries worldwide. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there have been 19 reports of the batteries overheating, including 17 reports of flames/fire (10 resulting in minor property damage).
Customers affected by this latest Sony battery recall should contact the relevant company website to claim a free replacement battery.

This has now changed with the introduction of a new service by Internet AdsOn Video which offers small businesses a chance to obtain professionally designed video ads to use on their sites at a cost that is affordable to virtually all online businesses.

Planning for the future

Making sensible financial arrangements for when we're no longer around is something that most of us tend to put off indefinitely. Let's be honest, considering such matters makes us aware of our mortality and that's a feeling we can do without in a world that often feels difficult enough. At some stage though we'd be well advised to grasp the nettle and get our finances sorted out.
An example of something that we tend to leave to the last minute is taking steps to reduce inheritance tax. In earlier times this form of taxation affected only a relatively small proportion of the UK population. Nowadays a greater number of people are pushed above the inheritance tax threshold due to the value of their homes.
Whether you're looking at things from the perspective of a business owner or an individual it makes sense to pass on as much of your wealth as possible to your children or partner. Obtaining the services of a good accountant who is fully conversant with inheritance tax UK regulations will help ensure you pass on the bulk of what you've worked so hard for over the years.

With the current economic climate things are very dififcult for buyers and sellers of property in the UK. Low demand combined with high interest rates and expensive mortgages are bad enough but having to pay stamp duty makes things even worse.

The Go-Giver
Posted on 18 June 2008 at 21:20
I love this little book. It's a simple story that shows how you can achieve success in business, and in life, by following Five Laws of Stratospheric Success.
Some people may call its basic premise simplistic but if you read it with an open mind you're likely to learn something that you can put to use - I know I did. At the very least it's an enjoyable read.
Co-written by authors Bob Burg and John David Mann, The Go-Giver tells the story of an ambitious young man named Joe who yearns for success. Joe is a true go-getter, though sometimes he feels as if the harder and faster he works, the further away his goals seem to be. During the course of his search, Joe learns that changing his focus from getting to giving—putting others’ interests first and continually adding value to their lives—ultimately leads to unexpected returns.
Don't Do It All Yourself
Posted on 18 June 2008 at 20:54
One of the biggest handicaps to any small business owner is the fascination with doing everthing by him or herself. We just can't let go! No-one else could possibly do it as well as we can! Who can you trust?
We've all been there and suffered as a result. This can even be a problem in bigger businesses where executives often perceive delegation as a sign of weakness.
The truth is, there are thousands of experts out there who will do the job better than you or I and they might not cost as much as you think. Take event management as an example - have you ever struggled to organise a conference or event and found that it took up more time than it was worth? Or at least that's how you felt at the time.
Why not make use of experts who love to organise, whose passion is putting on a show for clients and their guests - experts such as I Love Event Management who can deliver memorable corporate events in Manchester and further afield for a lot less than you probably imagine.
Don't be a martyr - let go and get on with building your business.
Enjoy What You Do
Posted on 18 June 2008 at 16:34
An important component in achieving business success is learning to enjoy what you do. Most successful business owners possess a love for what they do and in times of difficulty that can often be the driver that keeps them going.
Sometimes it's difficult to identify that quality in mainstream business people but in some professions it's almost impossible to miss. Take photographers for example - the enthusiasm and passion they feel for what they do is evident in the final product. This is clearly demonstrated in the work of this wedding photographer in West Yorkshire whose photographs scream out passion, fun and happiness.
Not all business owners have the luxury of working in an environment that allows such vivid artistic expression, but do you at least enjoy what you do? Because that's a start.
