Criminal record expunged…a second chance?
- Posted at 08:18 on 2007-Nov-26 by Duncan Carver
Perhaps some people do not understand what getting your criminal record expunged would mean. Basically getting your criminal record would mean that if you were asked anything about any kind of criminal activity like if you were ever arrested or convicted for a crime you may answer no and would be lying. Even in a court of law you could honestly say no and no one could do anything about it. Now for many people this is something that is a huge weight that is lifted off of their shoulders. People who make one bad decision a long time ago must pay for it for the rest of their lives.
Now I do not mean that someone who has been to prison for murder or any kind of violent crime can have their criminal record sealed but a person who is say 25 and when they were 19 had a drug possession charge and got probation for it may have their criminal record expunged. This is not something that violent career criminals use to get back into society. Getting a criminal record expunged is something that citizens that made a poor choice on a non violent issue can use to get their life back again.
There are many jobs and occupations that would be cut off from someone who has a criminal record. Many people would have a hard time with higher education because of their criminal record. There are questions all over society that want to know if you have ever been arrested or convicted of a crime that is something other than a traffic violation. This kind of question can seriously affect the rest of someone’s life because they were weak when they were in their late teens or early twenties and had a bit of a drug problem.
How do we treat these people when they have grown up a bit and have re focused their lives? We still keep them as a part of society that must be kept down and not invited back into our society’s walls. Yet we get angry when they can not make anything better of their lives. What kind of choices does that leave them with? What kind of choice will a young man or woman who is trying to support their family have when they can only get a minimum paying job and not be able to go to college because of their criminal record. Again these are not violent criminals we are discussing here, these are people who made a mistake and are now years later still suffering for it.
When you are looking into getting your criminal record expunged remember there are certain criteria that you must meet. Contacting an attorney can help you decide if you even qualify for getting your criminal record expunged. An attorney will also be needed to file the proper paper work with the courts. It is not an easy process but for those people are still suffering for a mistake from the past it is worth everything to have their lives back. There are books you can read and there is plenty of information on the internet so just do some research and you will find a way to get your life back again through getting your criminal record expunged. |
