Finding a job with a criminal record
- Posted at 08:32 on 2007-Dec-3 by Duncan Carver
As soon as someone is arrested there will be some sort of criminal record. When a criminal record has begun sometimes that record will get longer and longer over the years and sometimes it will only have the initial charges on it. None the less when a crime has been committed and you have been arrested for it, you will have a criminal record from that moment on.
You may ask what that means for you. Well it depends on several different things. First of all if you have a criminal record and you continue to commit crimes one after another you may not really care about having a criminal record or the repercussions of having a criminal record. However if you have only a small, one time criminal record then it could mean a lot of trouble trying to obtain employment. You may have trouble finding employment, whether your criminal record is long or short and for many people that is a very hard thing to face.
If you wanted to go on to a higher education facility you may not be able to due to your criminal record. This is going to be a very big problem for someone that was looking for a career in a field that requires a college education. Having a criminal record could set a goal orientated individual back a long way. This can be a hard thing for some people to handle.
Even if you have no aspirations on going on to a high education you will find that getting employment may be difficult if you have a criminal record. There are many minimum wage jobs that would hire someone with a criminal record but in the whole picture who really wants to work for minimum wage. How can anyone really survive on minimum wage anyway? Many employers will look for criminal records and even though it is not supposed to be discriminated on, they may not hire someone with a criminal record and say it is for another reason.
Also there are many places that you can not obtain a job in because of the security factor and a criminal record. Las Vegas is one of those places that it is very hard to get a job in a casino or working some where similar when you have a criminal record. In Las Vegas there are cards that you must obtain called sheriff’s card and these cards are not easily obtained if you have a criminal record. That means that you can not work in a casino with out one of these cards. You can not be a blackjack dealer or a server or a bartender. Now normally these are not great jobs but in Las Vegas you can make a lot of money in these positions and you can not get these jobs with out having that sheriff’s card. Many states and places have similar cards. These cards are used to see if someone has a criminal record or not.
When someone has a criminal record it can change their life forever. By not being able to get the employment that they need or not being able to pursue the career that they always wanted it deeply affects a person. On many applications employers ask if someone has ever been arrested and you must answer truthfully. If you do not answer truthfully you can be instantly fired when the truth comes out. Having a criminal record is something that no one wants but many people actually have. If you wanted to look into getting your criminal record sealed you need to contact an attorney. |
