How your criminal record can affect you and how you may not even know it. - Posted at 06:58 on 2008-Oct-15 by Duncan Carver

You would never guess exactly how many people really do have a criminal record.  A criminal record can be acquired for anything at all that has any kind of legal repercussions. Any kind of criminal activity at all can land you with a criminal record.  Now most people think of a criminal record belonging to a life time criminal or someone who has been in and out of jail numerous times but the truth is a totally “normal” soccer mom could have a criminal record and no one would ever guess.

For people who have criminal records it is very hard for them to have a normal kind of life.  They have their criminal record hanging over their heads all of the time.  Even if they have already paid their dues and it may have been a few years ago a criminal record can still affect their daily lives all of the time.  The only way to get rid of a criminal record is to have that criminal record expunged.  In order for a criminal record to be expunged you must first contact a lawyer.

There are many reasons for someone to have a criminal record expunged.  A criminal record can really affect a person when they are trying to find a job or to find a place to live or even a loan of some kind.  People take a criminal record very seriously.  Potential employers are not supposed to judge a person because they have a criminal record and the job application typically ask you to explain if there is a criminal record of some kind but in all honesty, an employer will see a criminal record and not really want to hire you.  This can seriously affect how a person can survive.  Not getting a job because of a criminal record can mean devastation for a family that desperately needs that income.  Again it is not right for an employer to not hire someone because of a criminal record but it happens all of the time and there are many people that will not get the job because they do have a criminal record under them.  Think about it if you were the employer and you had two people put in an application, and they were both equally qualified to do the job but one had the criminal record, which applicant would you choose?  That is something that happens every day to people because they have a criminal record.

The same can be said for finding a place to live.  There are many people who will want to rent an apartment or a house and they will not be able to due to the fact that they have a criminal record.  Many home owners and property management companies will not want to rent to someone that has a criminal record if they have the option to rent the dwelling to someone who does not have a criminal record.  It can be very discouraging to someone who has the criminal record.

The best way to handle a criminal record is to see if you can have it expunged.  By contacting an attorney then you will be able to see if you are even able to get a criminal record expunged.   Not every criminal record can be expunged and it may be that you might not be able to have your criminal record expunged.  There are certain requirements that need to be met in order for your criminal record to be expunged.  By finding an attorney and speaking with them you will know if you can have the criminal record expunged and what you need to do in order to meet those requirements.
