A criminal record does not disappear and in fact the only way that a person can get rid of a criminal record is to have it expunged.  Having a criminal record expunged means that it is essentially not there anymore.  Once a criminal record has been expunged the only way that it can be opened is by a court order.  A criminal record can be sealed by a judge and that means that you can honestly say that you do not have a criminal record at all.  Even if you have had one in the past you do not have a criminal record anymore after it has been expunged.
