Living your life after a criminal record. - Posted at 02:44 on 2009-Feb-17 by Duncan Carver

Until you have experienced having a criminal record you will never really know what it is like to live with one.  A criminal record can drastically change the way that you live your life and the way that people will look at you and at times how you will look at yourself.  Having a criminal record can really make your life a lot harder than it would ever need to be.

You see a criminal record is obtained when any type of crime is committed.  When a crime happens a criminal record will also happen.  Now there are those people who have a very long and detailed criminal record and then there are those people who have a much smaller criminal record.  Either way though a criminal record is still the same whether it is long or short.  You never really think about how a criminal record will affect you and the way that you live your life but it does and it will.

One way that a criminal record can affect someone’s life is when they are trying to obtain a job.  Not just a career but a simple every day job where they can make an honest living and pay the bills and just simply take care of themselves.  A criminal record will always show up in a background check and the people who are doing the hiring may not want to give a job to someone who has a criminal record. Of course people will say that they will not discriminate against someone who has a criminal record but at the same time they do not have to tell them that their criminal record is the reason why they are not going to get the job.  For example if two people have the exact same qualifications and the exact same talents for a job and they both have the right personality for the job and everything is equal, do you think the person with the criminal record will get the job or the person with out the criminal record will get the job?

Another way that a criminal record may affect someone’s life is the fact that many higher learning institutions will not accept anyone who has a criminal record.  It may also affect the types of loans or grants that you can apply for.  And not only college or a trade school but afterwards too.  You may not be accepted into an internship that you would need for a certain career and it could change your whole life.

There are many ways that a criminal record can affect someone’s life and none of them are any good.  IT is a very negative aspect to have a criminal record even if you are trying to live the most respectable and law abiding life.  A criminal record will also stay with you forever.  It never goes away or fades away or stops being there after a certain amount of years.  A criminal record is there always and forever.  The only way that you can get rid of a criminal record is to have it sealed or expunged by a court.  The court will hear your case and then decide if you are able to have your criminal record expunged.

If you do decide to have your criminal record expunged then it is very necessary for you to contact a lawyer about having your record sealed.  An attorney will guide and advise you in what you need to do in order to have your life back. It is also necessary for an attorney to file all the necessary paperwork that will need to be filed with the courts so contacting one is very important.
