Adding wood floors into your home will not only increase the value of your home but it is also going to greatly improve the look as well. There are so many different reasons why putting hardwood flooring in your home is going to be a great choice.
Hardwood floors will last many years and you also have the ability to change the look by resanding the floors if you were to do some redecorating and the current color wouldn’t match. This will end up saving you a ton of money. Of course there are the most common benefits of having wood floors in your home. If you suffer from allergies then I am sure that you have been told a million times that they will help to reduce your symptoms. Well at the risk of sounding redundant it’s absolutely true. The reason is because there is no place for the dust mites to hide and get trapped like in the threads of rugs. So when you clean the floor the floor is actually clean.
I am not going to ramble on about why you should install hardwood floors in your home because what I would say is nothing new. But what I am going to talk about is the many different choices that you are going to have with hardwood floors. First off hardwood flooring is the best type of wood to put in your home, but it’s also one of the most expensive as well. There are other choices that you will have that will allow you many of the same benefits as hardwood flooring. Laminate flooring is one of your choices. This is the cheaper way to go but just because it’s cheaper doesn’t mean that its not good. You might even be able to install this floor yourself if you are handy which will save you even more money.
When you are remodeling your house you are going to be faced with so many different decisions and many different choices. The most important thing that you must remember is to take your time. You don’t want to rush into something and then regret it later on.
With the availability of the internet you can now look at many different choices of designs that you might want in your home. This can all be done without ever leaving your home. The amount of time that it would take you to go store to store would far exceed what you can do with the power of the internet in just a few minutes.
Once you decide on the style that you want to remodel your home you can then proceed to look at the different types of hardwood floors that you can choose from. The style will help you to decide on the type of wood. Some of the woods will go better with certain color stains. You should discuss this with the contractor that you hire to install the floors. But you should definitely learn as much as you can online before you talk with him. This will help the both of you make a choice that you will not regret.
The decision to install hardwood floors in your home is without a doubt one of the best decisions that you can make for yourself. They are absolutely beautiful in any style home.
Just remember to take your time looking at all of the different choices that you have in styles, types, stains, inlays and borders. There is no doubt about it that when you install hardwood floors in your home you will improve the look and feel of it. Let’s not forget that you will also increase the value of your home as well, this is an added bonus.
Hardwood floors are easy to maintain and keep clean. This is the floor type that is perfect for people that have allergies, and even pets. If you suffer from allergies you can definitely expect that you will have a lot less problems if you got rid of those allergy infested rugs that are currently in your home and put hardwood floors down. Rugs keep in many things that can be egging on your allergies such as dust mites.
When you have animals and dogs that shed keeping their hair off of the floor and on their bodies is not always an option. It’s an unfortunate part of owning a dog, but the many great benefits out weight this. When you have wood floors in your home it’s much easier to keep the control of the shedding hair in your favor. It’s never been easier to actually clean the floor and get all of the hair up when you do it. Rugs trap the hair in the threads so it never really gets everything up. Pretty disgusting if you ask me.
Keeping up with the maintenance of these floors is simple especially with all of the new and improved cleaning tools that are available today such as the swifter dry and swifter wet. They definitely have made cleaning your wood floors even easier.
There are many different designs that you have to choose from, and searching for the different designs on the internet will help you to get a better idea of what you have to choose from. There are inlays that would be a wonder addition to a big room, especially a foyer or borders that you can add around the room. Of course this will cost you more money, and if you are willing to spend it I greatly suggest adding these to your home.
The choices that you are going to have in hardwood is also going to be great. It’s important that you learn about the different woods to determine which one’s are going to suit your needs. If you have children and animals you will want a harder wood that will not get destroyed so easily. There are certain stains that will look better on certain types of woods so learning this will also help you to get the desire look that you want.
You can learn a lot about the different woods by searching the internet or you can also talk to the installer that will be putting the hardwood flooring into your home. I would suggest that you first read about it on the internet and discuss it with them.
Adding hardwood flooring into your home can prove to be expensive, and if you simply do not have the money to do this there are other options such as laminate wood flooring. This is much more cost effective and will offer you almost the same look that you might wish for in hardwood flooring. There are many different options in the colors and design in laminate flooring as well.
No matter which you decided to go with it will still offer you the same easy to keep clean effect that I am sure you have been wishing for if you have allergies, children or dogs.
Hardwood Floors Installation, Sanding and Refinishing Proper Procedure.
Posted on 2008-Jun-30 at 03:41
First things first you have to take the proper measurements when installing hardwoord floors. What you should do is break everything down into squares. Looking at the layout of your project if it is more than a room you must break everything down into square’s when measuring then what you will do is lets say for example you have an L shape living room and a hall way to do you will have lets say 10X10 and 10X20 for the living room and the hallway could be 4X25.
You would multiply each section for example 10X10=100 and 10X20=200 and 4X25=100 then you add up all the numbers for example 100+200+100=400 square feet you then call your supply house and tell them you have to cover 400 square feet they will add on the waste factor depending on the material it could be 5% to 15% waste.
You must have the wood delivered at least two weeks before you install your wood. It must acclimate to the moisture in your house so you wont have any problems with swelling or shrinking after you install your hard wood.
After your wood has been at your house for two weeks you need to go over the install area and bang down any nails pull up any staple’s after removing the rug then sweep everything up. If you have tile you need to break everything up and take it off until you get to the sub floor.
If the sub floor is ok you can continue to install your hardwood floor, if not you should consider getting quarter inch plywood and nail or screw it down to your existing sub floor.
Also you should walk around and look for any squeaks as you step putting all your weight into every step and listen for any squeaks when you find it put some nails or screw’s in the sub floor to get rid of the squeaky sounds.
Next you need to roll out tar paper yes the same paper you use on your roof you put down over your sub floor for the moisture and then you find the longest straightest wall and your start from that point.
You mark a quarter inch off the wall to start your line and have your helper rip open the bundles looking for straight boards because if your rows of wood are not perfect they will mess up your whole job and it wont be straight. You need to chalk a line on the floor to use as a guide after you pick out a bunch of straight boards. Ok so you start your straight rows do about 2 rows and then drop a chalk line on it to see if it’s going straight.
You hold one end of the chalk line and your helper holds the other end and you see if you have to make any adjustments to line to keep it straight. If you have to pull the rows out then you need to use a pry bar to pull it off the wall or you take a piece of scrap wood and smash it into the row to nock the row into place then once it is straight you rack the whole area out meaning lie down all the boards and cut them to fit then you simply start nailing them in. Keep the seams at least 4 to 6 inches apart and you should be good to go.
Also you need to keep a quarter inch gap around the floor for expansion gaps and don’t forget to check once in a while to see if the rows are straight. Look out for my next article for the proper sanding of hardwood floors.

There Are Important Things To Know Before Installing Your Laminate Flooring
Posted on 2008-Jun-12 at 04:24
If you plan on installing laminate flooring in your home all on your own, then it’s important that you have a good understanding of just how to do this. This can be a simple thing to do if you know just what you are doing. So let’s get right down to it shall we.
Before you go out and purchase your laminate flooring it’s important that you know just how much to purchase. This is obvious right? Of course but there are so many people who don’t account for mistakes such as poor cutting and measuring. It happens, and there is nothing worse then having to go back out to the store to pick up a few more bundles of flooring.
Another very important thing that you must do after you purchase your flooring is to let it sit in your home for a few days. This will allow the wood to acclimate to you the temperature of your home. If you don’t do this it can potentially ruin the entire floor in just a few short days because the wood might expand or contract depending on the temperature of your home.
The above two things are very important and will save you from a lot of potential agony that could have been avoided. But there’s more. When you are installing the laminate flooring it’s important that you leave room between the floor and the wall because as I mentioned before the wood will expand and contract. If the wood expands it will buckle if it is too close to the wall. Leaving the space will allow the floor to expand without hindering the look of the floor.
If you have never done this type of installation it’s important that you watch a few video’s on how to install it. This will give you the confidence that you need to get started. There are so many video’s on how to install laminate flooring available to you on the internet, or you can go to your local book store and purchase a book on how to do it as well. Either way I suggest that you do one of the two.
Installing laminate flooring is fairly simple and understanding the proper way to install the floors will eliminate many errors that are very common. Such as removing the moldings, doors, and baseboards in the room that you are installing the laminate flooring in. Or fixing the floors if there are any bumps, curves or holes to prevent any uneven floors.
If you do not feel confident enough to complete this task on your own don’t worry you can easily find a good wood floor guy in your area. Pick up the paper and begin getting quotes from various companies. Don’t go with the cheapest quote because you often get what you pay for. The best way to find a good wood floor guy is through a referral from a friend or colleague.
Installing laminate flooring in your home is going to add a great amount of beauty to your home. And my favorite part about wood floors is that they are so easy to keep clean and looking absolutely beautiful for many years to come.

Preparing Your Floors
Posted on 2008-Apr-7 at 02:29
If you plan on installing your own hardwood floors than you must read every single word on this page. There are a few steps that you are going to need to take to prepare your floors for installing hardwood flooring. If you do not follow these steps than you can be making your life much more difficult than it needs to be because you will have many problems.
The first thing that you are going to want to do is find a place to store the wood for a few days. You are going to want to keep the wood in your home for a few days before you actually install it to adjust to your homes temperature and humidity. This is called acclimating and it’s going to keep your wood from expanding once it is installed.
When you are installing hardwood flooring it’s important that you have all of the necessary tools, and you will also need to be sure that the floor is clean and level. It is very easy for you to install a sub flooring. You can find many online videos that will show you step by step how to install a sub floor. These video’s are so helpful, so I suggest that you find them on youtube and begin learning all that you can. It will make your experience much better if you know exactly what you are doing before you begin.
Now when you are ready to install the hardwood floors you want to be sure that everything is all level, and all of your tools are accounted for. This will ensure a much smoother working day.
Okay the first thing that you are going to need to do is make straight lines on the floor to ensure that everything is straight right from the beginning. The way that you can accomplish this is by starting at the middle of the room and making a chalk line that is parallel to the wall that you are going to start installing the hardwood flooring.
The very most important thing that you must do once you begin installing the hardwood floor is to be sure that you are leaving enough space along the wall. You do not want to butt the hardwood floor boards right up against the wall because what will end up happening is when the seasons begin to change the wood is going to expand and contract. This is going to make the floor buckle and basically the floor is not going to look the way that you want it too.
Once you get in the first few rows the rest will be much easier.

What to look for in a professional wood floor company.
Posted on 2008-Mar-28 at 02:46
What to do when you want to hire a hardwood flooring company. I think you should be very careful who you allow in your home. Some people find one company and stick with them forever and I think that is a great thing.
Once you find someone who cleans up and does a great job with out doing any damage to anything else around your home then tell all your friends and family about them. I think they deserve this don’t you.
Most people base everything on price and that is a big mistake. Trust me I understand how hard it is to live and raise a family. Do you want to go with the cheapest guy don’t forget in this world most of the time you get what you pay for.
You simply must ask for referrals and proof of work they have done so you can see and check up on them for your self. Also I recommend never going with the first person you meet. Instead go with several estimates and based on the vibe you get and the referrals then the price you should go with them.
I would also ask and insist on the owner being on the job. Workers tend to not do as a good job when the boss is not around. A good way to get around this and a good thing to do anyway is offer to buy lunch and always check if they need anything.
You would be surprised on how many people won’t even offer people water from the sink. Then they wonder why the people who are breaking there backs to make those old nasty floors new and sexy did not put forth their best effort
So lets recap real quick some things we discussed earlier. So first thing lets not base anything on just price alone because you get what you pay for in this world. You have to think to yourself why they are so much cheaper. Sometimes you go for the cheaper quote and you end up having to pay more because the work was not top quality work. Your hardwood floors are going to be seen all of the time and it's important they are beautiful.
They must be cutting corners or using finish that will wear off very soon. Or they may have just started out or simply don’t understand how to price anything. All of this is not the best sign that they are the one to hire.
Next I would get as many referrals as I could and talk to some people that they have worked for in the past. Check with the better business bureau and see if they have any complaints. I would not hold that against them to much some people are impossible to work for and they will complain for silly things.
Obviously if it’s a bad complaint you never call them back. You should check out how they act how do they carry themselves. Do you have kids do even say hi to your children or if you have a pet do they say hi to your pet.
Do they have alcohol on there breath. This is unfortunately a very common thing in the construction industry and something that you must be aware of.
Most of all use good judgment and check out all references I hope you find someone that works out for you and you can have the work in your house for years to come. You might want to ask them if they have anyone they can recommend for any other work you do around your house.
Good people are always hanging out together and you can tap into that goodness

The truth about hard wood floor finish products that they don’t want you to know about…
Posted on 2008-Mar-14 at 02:39
Okay lets get started with some basic types of hardwood floor finish products that could be used in your home, and add a wonderful new look to your home.
The first is the most common or has been until recent laws have been passed about using toxic chemicals. The solution is water based products we will go over this in just a few minutes, but first I want to tell you about oil based products. Oil base products depending on the manufacturer come in three shines.
First shine is flat and it is exactly what it sounds like flat. No shine and it looks like nothing was done to your floor. Hey some people like this look so if you’re into it then go for it.
Second is a semi gloss finish. It has a lot more life to it and it is not to shiny so you wont get the bowling alley effect if that’s what you want. Then you need the next finish that they make and that is high gloss and holy cow some times it is so shiny you can be blinded by it.
Oil base is ok but the least durable of the three types of finish I will be discussing today. It is also the most easy to use so most hardwood floor guys will tell you it’s the best and they will sell you on it.
The most durable was moisture cure and you could drive a tank on your wood floor and not see a mark. But this is not very safe.
Not really but you need a chemical mask so you don’t get sick. They had to cut down the finish because it was so bad for people the planet and everything else. It is still better than oil base even the cut down version. Although it is nothing like it used to be so they came up with some thing else my third finish and it is waterbase.
Listen you get what you pay for so I would only recommend pacific strong from bona kemi. Any one who say’s they used water base and that it didn’t hold up well they got the cheapest stuff they could find.
Listen water base is awesome and they even came out with water based products that are 10% harder then moisture cure. I think the new moisture cure not the old stuff but hey it is still strong but you don’t need that if its your house or rooms that never get anyone in them.
Water base is also much easier to fix if you scratch any part of your wood floor you can just spray some on and it will dry even. You could never do that back in the day.
You would need to re coat the whole job or room. That could be a nightmare and it has been for many people.
OK so let’s see if you have a house that gets a little traffic I would use oil base because it just looks good. Water base is much lighter and clear as oil is more orange and yellows over time.
I would stay away from moisture cure only if you have a dance studio or a bar you should get that stuff. You will have to shut down you business to. No one can breath that stuff in. You could use the strong water base but it does not drive very nicely.
Well I hope that you found this helpful, and I wish you luck with your new project. Take your time choosing the perfect hardwood floor finishing products and you will love the outcome.
Top 3 Reasons you need wood floors in your house…
Posted on 2008-Mar-2 at 02:52
There are many reasons why wood floors have so many advantages. Let's look at 3 main reasons:
Number 1 reason to have wood floors in your house for me is allergy symptoms. You may not even realize how many little things all your carpet has crawling around in it. Things that may be driving your eyes or your nose a little crazy.
Dust mites are the biggest thing I can think of that is all over carpet and made my allergies go crazy. Wood floors almost eliminate all allergens and are much easier to clean and maintain more on cleaning a little later. When your wood floors are sanded and refinished you shouldn’t have any dust mites around and you are well on your way to be dust mite free. Some other things you can do are getting rid of your curtains and just use blinds because they are easy to wipe down and don’t hold as much dust.
Number 2 reason. You should have a wood floor is because they are so easy to clean and maintain.
I love dogs not to fond of cats because I AM ALERGIC to them but that’s another article.
About those dogs see I had two puppies at once for my first pet or should I say pets. Not the smartest thing I ever did. Now that I am thinking about my life it was certainly not my last stupid thing either. Anyway I had carpet where I lived and fast forward 10 years later I think if that carpet was still down the pee would still not be totally dry.
Just imagine you are watching a movie you let your puppy lay at your feet and you get rapped up in the movie and the little guy gets up lets it loose. You have to get a paper towel and a shoe if you have none on and step on the pee to absorb it into the paper towel. What a nightmare and you never get all the pee up. It sits under the carpet and the padding for long time staying as smelly as ever.
Wood floors you can just wipe up and liquid and not worry as far as carpet goes you will be waiting a very long time for the smell to go away hopefully you don’t have a lot of puppy pee to deal with.
Number 3 reason. You can always change the look and feel of any room with wood floors installed. They can be changed as much as 16 times as far as the color goes and the shine of the finish used. With other flooring material once you have it down that’s it. See you had to deal with the discomfort of your housed turned upside down depending on how much of your flooring is getting done. You had a huge expense to pay and you can never change the mood of the room unless you get everything ripped out and you start fresh.
Wood floors can always be re sanded and refinished to match changing times or to change the mood of your room. Lets say you just purchased a house you can change the wood floors by sanding them and resatining them the color that you want. This will be less expensive then purchasing new material and then paying for that material to be installed.
You have to figure that what ever you paid per foot for the material you will pay for labor. Say 2.50 a foot for basic Pergo material you will get an installer to start his price at 2.50 a foot. I hope I help you in your decision on what type of floor you will get in your house.
EPLF presents final 2006 sales figures
Posted on 2007-Oct-30 at 05:10
After EPLF sales figures based on the first three quarters of 2006 forecast a further global downturn in laminate flooring manufactured in Europe for the whole year, the final sales figures compiled by the EPLF indicate a slight increase. The overall results for 2006 are therefore better than expected, so that EPLF-affiliated manufacturers can be satisfied, in spite of the slump in the US market. The growth is due to increases in sales in Western and Eastern European markets in the fourth quarter of 2006, primarily in Germany.
Worldwide in 2006, the 20 member companies of the EPLF achieved sales of 468 million m² of laminate flooring manufactured within Europe (previous year = 465 million m²). This represents an increase in global market sales of 0.7 %. The market share held by EPLF member companies in the world market is estimated by the Association at around 60%.
Not only Western European markets but also those in Eastern Europe recorded continued growth in 2006. In Western Europe, sales reached some 285 million m² of laminate floorings (previous year = 274 million m²), while in Eastern Europe the figure was 88 million m² (previous year = 82 million m²). This represents growth of 4% in Western Europe and 7% in Eastern Europe. Ahead of the field in Western Europe are Germany, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands, while their counterparts in Eastern Europe – Poland, Romania and Russia – each recorded sales of over 10 million m² of laminate flooring.
The figures show that the markets of Western Europe remain the most important sales areas for EPLF member companies. With 98 million m² (previous year = 88 million m²), Germany again showed strong growth and remains by far the largest single European market. This corresponds to an increase in sales of 11%. Great Britain stemmed its reversal of sales in the previous year to stabilize at 40 million m² (previous year = 40 million m²) and lies in second place in Western European market rankings. France recorded a slight reversal with sales of 36 million m² (previous year 37 million m²) and is in third place. The Dutch market remains at the previous year’s sales level with 20 million m² and occupies fourth place.
The market is seen to be shifting in North America. A year-on-year comparison reveals a fall in total sales of laminate floorings manufactured in Europe from 85 million m² in 2005 to 68 million m² in 2006. This corresponds to a drop of 20%. This is due on the one hand to individual EPLF member companies setting up their own production facilities in the USA and on the other to the increase in Chinese exports to the USA. On the other hand, the South American market continued to grow with sales of 12 million m² in 2006 (previous year = 10 million m²) in Latin American countries (+20%).
The Asia/Pacific region continued to post increases in growth in 2006. Sales by EPLF member companies to Asian markets amounted to 11 million m² in 2006 (previous year = 8 million m²). This represents an increase of 37 %, which was due primarily to intensive market coverage on the part of individual manufacturers. The low overall level of laminate flooring sales by European manufacturers in Asia compared to those in Europe and the Americas is due to the high number of local suppliers, particularly in China. In view of the increased local competition from Asia, leadership in quality and innovation remains a key factor for market success for European manufacturers in global markets.
