Engineered hard wood flooring as opposed to traditional hard wood flooring

Posted on 2008-Dec-8 at 08:55

Today everyone is watching what they spend and how they spend any and all of their money.  So when a person wants to redo their flooring in their home it would make sense for them to stick with a method that will not be too expensive.  Even though a person may want to put in hard wood flooring in their homes, hardwood flooring is one of the most expensive ways to go.  The wood looks so beautiful and is so easy to take care of that many people would just love to have hard wood flooring throughout their house.  The way to make that still happen and not spend way more money than your budget would allow is to go the route of engineered hard wood flooring.

Engineered hardwood flooring still gives you the beauty of the traditional hard wood flooring but at a fraction of the price.  Engineered hardwood flooring offers all of the benefits of the traditional hard wood flooring and then some but it gives it to you at a price that everyone can truly afford.  This is how it happens.  First of all even though the hard wood flooring is engineered it is still wood.  The first few top layers of the flooring are real wood and then the bottom layers are similar to ply wood.  That is why it is much less expensive.  There are factories that make this wood just for the purpose of flooring.  With only the top layers being real wood it is a much more cost effective method and makes it very reasonable for people to use engineered hard wood flooring in their homes as opposed to the much more expensive traditional hard wood flooring.

Another great thing about the engineered hard wood flooring is that it is extremely easy and simple to install.  With the traditional hardwood flooring you would have to find a contractor to come into your home and install the traditional hard wood flooring, unless of course you yourself knew how to install the hard wood flooring or you had a friend that knows how to do the installation. Unfortunately most of us do not have that luxury so you would have to pay to have someone come in and do it for you.  That means having strangers in your home and of course the inconvenience of other people in your every day life and having to move around the mess of the old flooring being pulled up and the new one being set down.  And no one can ever tell you how long the whole process will really take and it always seems to be a lot longer than they first said.

With the engineered hardwood flooring it comes in boxes and the boxes will actually have instructions for installation on them.  You could make the installation process a weekend project.  There would be no strangers in your home, just you and a friend or two and you would be done within a weekend.  Plus there is no paying anyone to come out and install it. You just keep saving money when you choose to use the engineered hard wood flooring.

Engineered hard wood flooring has some truly great aspects.  Traditional hard wood flooring still offers some beautiful work and if you can afford it then you should get it.  However the engineered hard wood flooring will offer you the same great benefits as the traditional hard wood flooring will and some extra ones at that.  Ultimately it is up to you but before you go and get the traditional hard wood flooring you should at least go out and look at some of the engineered hard wood flooring, you may end up saving yourself a ton of money.

Save money with engineered hard wood flooring.

Posted on 2008-Nov-14 at 05:48

Purchasing engineered hardwood flooring can really save you a lot of money if you are looking to redo the floors in your home.  If you wanted to get the traditional hard wood flooring in your home then you would definitely have to spend quite a bit of money.  However if you choose to use the engineered hard wood flooring then you will not spend even close to what you would if you were going to use the traditional hard wood flooring.

There are several reasons that using the engineered hardwood flooring is a better idea than using the traditional hard wood floor.  First of course is the price of the engineered hard wood floor. It is much less expensive than the traditional hard wood flooring and that is probably one of the best reasons to use the engineered hard wood flooring.  It also looks absolutely beautiful.  These two reasons are for the same reason.  The engineered hard wood flooring looks so good because the top several layers of the engineered hard wood flooring is actually real wood.  It is also less expensive because the bottom layers are of a different material.  The lower layers are typically made from plywood.  These layers make it look wonderful and just like the traditional hard wood floors and it also makes it much less expensive.

Another reason that people should choose to use engineered hard wood flooring and one of the reasons that they actually do use it more often is because it is so very easy to install.  To install the traditional hard wood floors you would typically have to call someone who is a professional installer and they would have to install all of your hard wood floors for you.  But when you get the engineered hard wood flooring you will see how easy it is to really install the new engineered flooring yourself.  You will save a ton of money by not having to hire some professional to install your hard wood floor.  That is a very expensive part of having traditional hard wood floors put in to your home.

When you purchase the engineered hard wood flooring you will see that every box comes with its own instructions.  By using the instructions and setting some time aside you will find that it is very easy indeed to install the engineered hard wood flooring.  It is basically like putting a really big puzzle together except that you have some directions on how to do so.  The traditional hard wood floor will never come with instructions.

The engineered hard wood floor looks a lot like real wood because the top few layers are made of real wood. You can get any type of wood finish that you would like for your engineered hard wood flooring.  You can get cherry wood, maple wood, bamboo wood, and many other types of wood for your new floor.  Because the top layers are made from real wood they will be able to be sanded if there is any damage done later on.  Of course you should seriously consider hiring someone at that point because the layers are not nearly as thick as real traditional hard wood flooring and you do not want to ruin your floors because you did not really know what you were doing.

Finding engineered hard wood flooring is not hard either.  You can find almost any type of engineered hard wood flooring at any local do it yourself store.  They will have many different types of woods available and the types of wood that they do not have they can simply order for you.  So before you go out and spend a lot of your hard earned money on a traditional hard wood flooring you should seriously consider engineered hard wood flooring.

Engineered hard wood flooring is the best to increase the value of your home.

Posted on 2008-Oct-29 at 06:12

Engineered wood flooring is probably the best choice for many homeowners to use when they are considering redecorating their homes.  When a home owner wants to make improvements to their home the flooring is typically the biggest change that is possible.  Changing the flooring will usually increase the value of your home also and using engineered hard wood flooring will make that improvement easy and definitely increase the value of your home.

Now you might ask why someone would want to use engineered hard wood flooring as opposed to the traditional hard wood flooring and there are actually several answers but to say that the engineered hard wood flooring is actually easier and better would suffice.  Engineered hard wood flooring is first and foremost much less expensive than traditional hard wood flooring and that right there makes it more appeasing to many home owners.  If the home owner spends less on the improvement but it still retains the higher increase in value they get a bigger profit.  Engineered hard wood flooring is also much, much easier to install.  There are many home owners that enjoy doing their home improvements themselves but installing a hard wood floor was typically left to the professionals; however with the engineered hard wood flooring a home owner can certainly install it themselves.  Those are two of the major reasons that a home owner would choose to use the engineered hard wood flooring rather than traditional hard wood flooring.

Let us take a look at why engineered hard wood flooring is better than traditional hard wood flooring.  The cost is less expensive because the engineered hard wood flooring is typically made from layers of plywood with the top several layers of real wood.  It is still real wood but the layers on the bottom are made of plywood and that is why the cost is less expensive.  The top layers of wood can also come in any wood finish that you would like.  There are engineered hard wood flooring in cherry wood, birch wood, oak wood, maple wood, and many other types of wood.  So it is easy to find the type of wood that you would like for your new floor when you use engineered hard wood flooring.

The ease of the engineered hard wood flooring is also wonderful.  Normally you would need to pay someone to come out and install your traditional hard wood flooring but that is not the same when it comes to engineered hard wood floors.  The traditional wood floors must be nailed to a wood floor that is underneath however the engineered hard wood flooring can be put together a few different ways.  You can of course nail down an engineered hard wood floor but typically a floating floor method is used.  That is where the pieces of the engineered hard wood floor are glued and snapped together to complete the floor.  It is basically just like a rather large puzzle and you just have to put all of the pieces together.  The great thing about that is the engineered hard wood flooring always comes with directions which are typically found taped to the inside of the box.  All you need is a few tools and about a weekend of work and you will have a beautiful new hard wood floor.

When you are done no one will be able to tell that your new engineered hard wood floor is not the traditional wood flooring.  It will be beautiful and your home will go up in value.  You really can not go wrong with engineered hard wood flooring and that may be the reason why it is so very popular.

Recycled or reclaimed hardwood flooring is something that is not difficult to do at all.  There are actually a few different ways to go about finding the reclaimed or the recycled hard wood flooring that you may want.  The first way is to actually go to the landfills or the junk yards and see what kind of lumber has been thrown away.  There are also some lumber yards that have a lot of recycled hard wood flooring materials that you can find and purchase.  Once you have found the recycled or the reclaimed hard wood flooring that you want you must typically clean it all up and then fix any issues that the wood may have before you use it in your own home.  This is something that only someone that is relatively skilled in wood should do as you may end up costing yourself more money than you wanted to spend.  But if you have the time to invest and the money and the talent then searching for any hardwood flooring that has been discarded by someone else could be the right thing for you to do as it is very rewarding for many people who chose this route.

The easier way and of course the more popular way to find and use recycled and reclaimed hard wood flooring is to simply contact a company that sells recycled or reclaimed hard wood flooring and purchase the materials from them.  These companies may either carry recycled hard wood flooring or simply specialize in the reclaimed or recycled materials, either way finding a company is a lot easier and much less time consuming than going out and searching for the recycled wood yourself.  Also by using a company that already has the recycled hard wood flooring you will find that there are many different shades of wood that you can find and also the wood is already mended in many ways.  This hardwood flooring is the best for so many people.

Many companies that specialize in recycled hardwood flooring will offer many different materials in many different types of woods.  There will be cherry hard wood flooring, there would be beech hard wood flooring, oak, maple and a few other of the more popular woods that are used in hard wood floors.  If you want to find a more exotic type of hard wood flooring you may have to search a few different companies.

Using recycled or reclaimed hard wood flooring is very nice for many people.  The hard wood floors look great in so many homes and really increase the value of your home because so many people find hard wood flooring desirable.  Also by using recycled hard wood flooring you are helping the planet.  When trying to go green you have to remember that every little bit helps.

The Most Common Causes Of Wood Floor Damage

Posted on 2008-Sep-30 at 09:28

Wood floors are an amazing way to increase the look and feel of your home. They add a great amount of beauty and elegance to your home. There are so many different types of wood flooring that you can get put in, such as hardwood flooring and laminate floors just to name a few. These are both the most popular types of flooring. But with every decision comes additional decisions that you must make based on various factors. There are advantages and disadvantages to every choice that you can make with your wood floors, and it’s important that you know what they are so that you can make a wise choice.

Laminate flooring is the cheaper route to go when having wood floors put into your home, but they still look amazing and give you the same benefits that hardwood flooring will without the high cost. But there is something that you should know about, and this is what the common causes of damage is to your laminate flooring or hardwood flooring.

First off water damage is the most common and we all know the effect water can have on your wood floors. But water damage doesn’t just happen from a toilet bowl that over flows or a pipe bursting. Water damage can be done by moping your floors.

The next form of damage that can occur to your wood floors is scratches. Some types of woods will scratch easier then others. These scratches can easily happen, and many times most of the causes can actually be avoided. The obvious things that will scratch the floors will be animals, and moving furniture across the floors. But there are less obvious things that can actually do the most damage and this is dirt. Dirt is brought in from outside on shoes, and this will begin to scratch the floors. It will slowly begin to take the shiny floor and make it dull, and you will notice it quickly in the most highly traveled areas of your home. This reason alone is why you do not wear shoes in your home.

Adding wood flooring into your home is one of the best additions that you can possibly add to your home. And it’s very important that you completely understand the advantages and disadvantages of what choices that you have before you, such as laminate flooring and hardwood flooring. But then there are other choices within those choices. So learning everything that you can about the different types of wood floors will definitely help you to make the best choice for you and your home situation. If you have animals and children you might want to go with hardwood flooring. Hardwood flooring can be re sanded to bring back the beauty that it once had, while laminate flooring does not have this option.

If your budget does not allow you the choice of installing hardwood floors in your home laminate flooring will be your only choice to enjoy the many advantages that you have from having wood floors installed in your home. This is not a bad thing at all. Most laminate floor manufacturers do offer amazing guarantees on their products. So look around and see what they are offering before choosing the cheapest one you find. This can save you from many problems in the long run.

The Worst Places To Put Wood Flooring

Posted on 2008-Sep-22 at 09:27

Adding wood flooring to your home is a wonderful addition to the interior design of your home, and also a great investment to it as well. But there are certain places in your home that you do not want to have them installed regardless of the type of wood flooring that you plan on installing. Don’t get me wrong here wood floors are durable and will definitely add a great amount of beauty and charm to virtually any room in your home.

So let’s take a look at what rooms should not have wood floors installed in.

One of the worst places to install wood floors in your home is the kitchen. The kitchen does look absolutely beautiful with wood floors, but most people that have them will tell you that this is also the area that the floors get the most damage. Think about it, how many times have you dropped something on the floor in the kitchen. It’s happens often, and usually the things that you are dropping can really damage the floors, such as can of tomato sauce. This will severally damage the flooring surface. And in order to fix this you will usually need to replace the boards that are damaged which will cost you a pretty penny. But if you want to install hardwood flooring or laminate flooring in your kitchen then the best thing that you can do is to invest in good mats that will cover it and protect it especially in the area’s that are most prone to damage.

Now the next worst place to add wood floors in your home is the bathroom. I am sure that this is something that you already know, but for those of you that don’t let me explain. Putting wood floors in your bathroom is just asking for trouble. This room has extreme temperature changes that involve moisture. Wood will expand and contract with temperature and you will quickly regret that you put them in here. I would stick with the linoleum flooring in this section of your home. Otherwise you will be redoing the bathroom floor in just a few short months.

There are so many amazing reasons why you would want to install hardwood flooring or laminate flooring in your home. But there are also many reasons why you want to really think about the area’s that you are having them installed. It could very well end up costing you more money in the long run if you install them in the two area’s of your home listed above.

You should also look into the best types of woods to use for your specific needs. The look of your home is important, but it’s also important that you get the most out of them as you possible can. Some wood types are harder so they will be able to withstand much more damage. While other woods are softer and will damage much easier. This is important, so I would do some research on the internet or talk with the company that you will be using for installing your hardwood floors or laminate floors in your home.

Searching on the internet will also give you the chance to see what the wood looks like and give you a much better idea of what you would want to have installed throughout your home. These are important factors that you should know.

Adding wood floors into your home is probably one of the best things that you can ever do. There are so many reasons why wood floors are the optimal choice over every other type of flooring. But you are going to have many different choices to make with this remodeling job. There are different types of wood flooring that you can have put in, such as hardwood flooring, laminate flooring, and pre-finished wood flooring. Each of these choices has their benefits and disadvantages as well. So it’s important that you understand the pros and cons of each of them.

There are many different places that you can learn about the pros and cons of the different type of wood flooring right online, and I highly suggest that you begin your search before you make your selection.

Let’s start of with hardwood floors. This is probably the best type of flooring to have installed in your home for one very important reason. You can resand them about 6 or 7 times. So you are actually getting a long life from your floor and let’s not forget to mention that every time that you redo the hardwood floors you can change the color of them. There are so many different choices of wood that will offer you many different types of styles. So you will have your work cut out for you here. But take your time and learn which wood types would be best for your specific situation, such as children and dogs.

Now for laminate flooring is also a great choice for different reasons. It’s cheaper then hardwood flooring, and the installation cost is also cheaper as well. The downfall to this type of flooring is that you can not sand them. So if they get ruined you will need to either rip up the whole floor or pay someone to patch the damaged sections. Most manufacturers will offer you a great guarantee that the floor will last so check out which one’s offer a guarantee and go with them because it will save you money if anything were to happen.

No matter which type of wood floors that you get you will be greatly improving the way that your home looks. Hardwood floors will increase the value of your home, and offer you a much easier way to keep your home clean. This is important for those of you that have allergies. Carpets keep nearly all of the allergens in the threads, and cause you to constantly feel sick. You will not have to worry about this with wood floors. Simply take a damp cloth or use the swifter daily and pick up all of the dirt and allergens that were collected for that day. It’s that simple.

It’s important that you learn how to properly take care of your floors. There are certain chemicals that you wouldn’t want to use on wood floors because it will eat away at the poly that was applied to them during installation. You can talk to the company that is installing the floors or you can search online. I believe that the swifter is the best way to clean your floors because it will not harm them in any way.

Start searching for the type of wood flooring that will best suit you and your wallet, and then begin picking out the stain and style that you want. It’s a bit time consuming, but it’s best to have no doubt at all that what you are choosing is the best choice for you.

When I say design of the floor what I mean is that you can choose to lay the floor out with the boards going on a 45 degree angle, or you can put in borders or even inlays. All of these things will only increase the beauty of the floors.

It’s important that you learn about the different wood that you can possible get. There are some hardwood floors that will withstand much more wear and tear then other’s because it’s harder or softer, while other’s will easily get damaged. So you will want to know this before you make your selection. There is nothing worse then finally choosing the wood only to find out that your dogs nails will destroy it quickly. There are many different websites online that can help you to make an educated decision on the type of wood that you should use for your specific situation.

Once you know which type of wood you should go with you will then have to decide on the look of the wood. Hardwood flooring comes in wide or thin boards. The wider boards are generally a country look, but you can learn about this during your research. Looking online and learning everything that you can possibly learn will help you to make the right selection for the look that you are going for.

Don’t get me wrong here you are going to have a difficult time making your selections, but taking your time and narrowing down your choices is the best way to get what you want and what is best for your home. Another way that you can narrow down your choices is by selecting a budget for this project. There are some types of wood that can be extremely expensive, and if you are doing a large area the cost can get pretty high very quickly, so just be aware of the price of the wood and the size of your area, and let’s not forget the cost to install the floors as well.

Installing hardwood flooring in your home has so many amazing benefits. For one as I mentioned earlier it will greatly improve the overall look and feel, it will also increase the value of your home, and another great thing is that it’s so easy to keep them clean. And when you have kids and animals you are constantly looking for easier ways to keep up with your housework.

There are right ways to clean your hardwood floors and there are also wrong ways as well. Never ever use bleach on your hardwood floors when you are cleaning them, this will quickly eat away at the coating that was put down on the floors and will also begin to change the color of the floors. The best way to clean them is with the Swifter or a damp rag.

Hardwood floors are easy to maintain and keep clean. This is the floor type that is perfect for people that have allergies, and even pets. If you suffer from allergies you can definitely expect that you will have a lot less problems if you got rid of those allergy infested rugs that are currently in your home and put hardwood floors down. Rugs keep in many things that can be egging on your allergies such as dust mites.

When you have animals and dogs that shed keeping their hair off of the floor and on their bodies is not always an option. It’s an unfortunate part of owning a dog, but the many great benefits out weight this. When you have wood floors in your home it’s much easier to keep the control of the shedding hair in your favor. It’s never been easier to actually clean the floor and get all of the hair up when you do it. Rugs trap the hair in the threads so it never really gets everything up. Pretty disgusting if you ask me.

There are many different designs that you have to choose from, and searching for the different designs on the internet will help you to get a better idea of what you have to choose from. There are inlays that would be a wonder addition to a big room, especially a foyer or borders that you can add around the room. Of course this will cost you more money, and if you are willing to spend it I greatly suggest adding these to your home.

The choices that you are going to have in hardwood is also going to be great. It’s important that you learn about the different woods to determine which one’s are going to suit your needs. If you have children and animals you will want a harder wood that will not get destroyed so easily. You can learn a lot about the different woods by searching the internet or you can also talk to the installer that will be putting the hardwood flooring into your home. I would suggest that you first read about it on the internet and discuss it with them.

This is much more cost effective and will offer you almost the same look that you might wish for in hardwood flooring. Hardwood Floors Installation, Sanding and Refinishing Proper Procedure.

Posted on 2008-Jun-30 at 03:41

First things first you have to take the proper measurements when installing hardwoord floors. What you should do is break everything down into squares. Looking at the layout of your project if it is more than a room you must break everything down into square’s when measuring then what you will do is lets say for example you have an L shape living room and a hall way to do you will have lets say 10X10 and 10X20 for the living room and the hallway could be 4X25.

You would multiply each section for example 10X10=100 and 10X20=200 and 4X25=100 then you add up all the numbers for example 100+200+100=400 square feet you then call your supply house and tell them you have to cover 400 square feet they will add on the waste factor depending on the material it could be 5% to 15% waste.

You must have the wood delivered at least two weeks before you install your wood. It must acclimate to the moisture in your house so you wont have any problems with swelling or shrinking after you install your hard wood.

After your wood has been at your house for two weeks you need to go over the install area and bang down any nails pull up any staple’s after removing the rug then sweep everything up. If you have tile you need to break everything up and take it off until you get to the sub floor.

If the sub floor is ok you can continue to install your hardwood floor, if not you should consider getting quarter inch plywood and nail or screw it down to your existing sub floor.

Also you should walk around and look for any squeaks as you step putting all your weight into every step and listen for any squeaks when you find it put some nails or screw’s in the sub floor to get rid of the squeaky sounds.

Next you need to roll out tar paper yes the same paper you use on your roof you put down over your sub floor for the moisture and then you find the longest straightest wall and your start from that point.

You mark a quarter inch off the wall to start your line and have your helper rip open the bundles looking for straight boards because if your rows of wood are not perfect they will mess up your whole job and it wont be straight. You need to chalk a line on the floor to use as a guide after you pick out a bunch of straight boards. Ok so you start your straight rows do about 2 rows and then drop a chalk line on it to see if it’s going straight.

You hold one end of the chalk line and your helper holds the other end and you see if you have to make any adjustments to line to keep it straight. If you have to pull the rows out then you need to use a pry bar to pull it off the wall or you take a piece of scrap wood and smash it into the row to nock the row into place then once it is straight you rack the whole area out meaning lie down all the boards and cut them to fit then you simply start nailing them in. Keep the seams at least 4 to 6 inches apart and you should be good to go.

Also you need to keep a quarter inch gap around the floor for expansion gaps and don’t forget to check once in a while to see if the rows are straight. Look out for my next article for the proper sanding of hardwood floors.
