Czech developer Grisoft has released its next-generation free antivirus program, AVG Free, for download.
The software, available for download from the company's website, is based on a new version of the company's for-pay software, AVG Professional 7.0. At the same time, Grisoft said that it would not be supporting the previous version of its free software after Dec. 31, including virus definition updates. The announcements were made over the weekend.

AVG Anti-virus is a separate, long standing offering. AVG Anti-Virus is a well-known anti-virus protection tool. AVG use to have that but they got rid of that feature. AVG is offering the personal version of thier anti-virus software for free including free updates. Alternatively, you can update manually or configure AVG to download updates at a scheduled time that suits you.

Just as important is use of the AVG Resident Shield (on-access scanner) function that scans your files in the background as you open, run and save them. Removed files are quarantined in the AVG Virus Vault.
