North East of England a 'must see' destination in 2008

The North East of England has emerged as a 'must-see' destination in 2008 by a leading travel guide.

The region is one of only 30 places around the world to make it into Lonely Planet's Bluelist 2008 'Go List' section - a chapter dedicated to detailing the up-and-coming destinations.

The book praises the North East as "the most exciting, beautiful and friendly region in the whole of England".

It pinpoints rejuvenated cities including Newcastle, fascinating history and the dramatic Northumberland wilderness among its attractions.

Last year's edition tipped Belfast as an up-and-coming city, and in the same year the city saw a record number of visitors.
