Manchester, one of the UK's largest cities, lies at the heart of the County of Greater Manchester.

The settlement was founded 2000 years ago by the future Roman Emperor Agricola, who built a fortress named Mamucium (meaning 'breast-shaped hill') after the distinctive shape of the rocky outcrop on which it stood.

It wasn't until the 18th century that Manchester came to world-wide prominence as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution.

The area saw the rapid growth of factories producing mechandise for the textile industry and it remained preminent until the 1950s, when foreign imports devasted the cotton industry.

Manchester's wealthy past means that it is home to many architectural showpieces, including its greatest monument the Manchester Town Hall, a neo-Gothic masterpiece, built in 1877.

Manchester's recent regeneration, has resulted in many striking modern buildings such as Urbis (Manchester's Centre for Urban Culture) and some stunning conversions of older buildings including the Corn Exchange and G-Mex. Because of its central position with the UK the city is a great base for tourism.

Manchester Arndale & Market Street home to all the High Street stores plus some independent shops Like so many cities all over the world, one of the best areas to dine out while in Manchester is Chinatown. In saying that, not all restaurants here are Chinese which is good as it means more variation. Visit the Rusholme area also for good indian food.

Manchester's compact city centre is less than one mile in diameter and within this and the surrounding area are a number of distinct area with a real mix of leisure facilities and shopping areas. Some of Manchesters finest hotels located within Deansgate including the Radisson Edwardian Hotel and the new Hilton Deansgate Hotel which is within the largest residential building in the UK.  For a truly festive experience visit the magical Manchester Christmas Markets. Considered to be amongst the best in Britain and Europe the markets transform the City with their charming traditional wooden chalets.

The City also has many fine listed buildings. Within the greater region are 170 tourist attractions including some 34 historic houses, country parks, moors, plains, hills and 8 theme parks all within an hour's drive away. For people in the locality, Manchester is a place to live - for some it is a place to do business - and for others it is increasingly becoming a place to visit as a Tourist.
is also, by virtue of its central location within the British Isles, an excellent base for tourism. Within 1 hour's drive are 3 major National Parks (the Lake District, the Peak District, and the Snowdonia National Park). Also within an hour's drive are the seaside towns of the Fylde coast of Lancashire (Blackpool, Lytham St Annes, Southport, Morecambe, Fleetwood), as well as the great cities of Lancaster, York, Chester and Liverpool.

Is cosmopolitan - it offers more than 30 styles of foreign cuisine, with distinctive Chinese and Asian areas of speciality. It has 80 golf courses, more theatres than any other city outside London, two Premier League football teams, two major television companies, three Universities, two symphony orchestras, and many small chamber ensembles.
