Destination - Stratford upon Avon

Welcome to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, steeped in culture and history. Set in the beautiful rural Warwickshire countryside, on the banks of the river Avon, it is one of the most important tourist destinations in the UK. With easy road, rail and airport access, it is the perfect place for a vacation or short break. Stratford has Anglo-Saxon origins, and grew up as a market town in medieval times.

Stratford is alive with the arts throughout the year. As well as the professional performances at the RSC, Civic Hall Theatres and other venues there are also the many and varied active amateur groups who perform a variety of events throughout the year.

The town centre has a modern shopping precinct with most chain stores and the old timbered buildings mingle in. It has a number of hotels in the Town centre and these include the Shakespeare Hotel, Alveston Manor and the Thistle Hotel

There are pleasant gardens along the River Avon and the Avon canal, you take a short river boat trip from here.

Other tourist attractions within the town include Shakespeare's birthplace and two contemporary buildings, Hall's Croft (the one-time home of Shakespeare's daughter, Susannah) and New Place, which stands on the site of an earlier house originally owned by the playwright himself. Also within the town is Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare was baptised and is buried
