Bristol's International Balloon Festival

Bristol is the proud home of the biggest balloon festival in Europe - the Discovery Channel International Balloon Festival which is held annually on the second weekend of August.

Edinburgh International Festival

The Edinburgh International Festival is now underway and is an annual feast of dance, theatre, opera & classical music.

Highlights from the 2007 festival included the The Bacchae starring the award-winning Hollywood actor Alan Cumming and the critically-acclaimed Simon Russell Beale appearing in Oedipus Rex. Music from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, with exciting opera and dance programmes.

The 2008 Festival will showcase a strong Eastern-European influence and a host of world, European and UK premieres, including work by ballet choreographer Matthew Bourne. It will also play host to the latest play from the National Theatre of Scotland at the Edinburgh Playhouse.

The finale of the summer festival is marked on 31 August with the breathtaking fireworks display which is set to impressive live music from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Previous years have used music from Romeo and Juliet and great American music. 2008, sees the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Nicolae Moldoveanu, featuring the capturing rhythms of central European folk music, through Brahms and Dvorak.
