What Parents Look For In A Family Restaurant

Posted on 2007-Nov-2 at 11:38
If you have children then you probably have stories to share
about experiences going out to eat with them. Most of the
time children enjoy eating out with their family at a
restaurant to celebrate their birthday or just to enjoy some
family time out of the house. However, most parents will
tell you it isn't always easy to keep everyone happy during
the event. Eating in a restaurant that is well designed for
children does make it much easier for them though

If you don't offer a good experience for a family while they
are eating in your restaurant, they won't be returning. It
doesn't matter how good the food is or how great your prices
are if they didn't have a good time there. Parents tend to
get stressed out when they take their children to a
restaurant anyway because of the risk of behavior problems
or spilled drinks. If they feel uneasy in the establishment
then it only escalated the overall level of stress the have
about it.

During the training of your staff you need to talk to them
about working with families that come in to eat. There are
some differences that they need to be aware of. Placing
extra napkins on the table is important because they will
likely be needed. Using cups with lids to serve drinks to
the children will reduce the number of spills. Waitresses
need to learn not to place hot plates directly in front of
small children because they can grab them very quickly and
get hurt

The first thing many parents notice when they sit down in
a restaurant is the menu. They will scan it to see if there
are any selections for children on it. The cost of their
dining experience may double if they have to buy their
children full meals which you would think is going to
increase your profits. Yet it will cost you them returning
as it is too expensive for them. Offer some good choices for
children and you will have a very family friendly menu.

Older children eat more but they may not be ready for a full
sized meal. You can offer a junior menu for them as well.
This will offer portions that are less than an adult meal
but more than you will be serving to the very small
children. You need to adjust the prices for these types of
children's meals as well. If you offer a buffet option in
your restaurant then charge a lower price for children to
eat, than for adults.

Children often get impatient when they are waiting for food,
so offer something fun for them to do. It doesn't cost very
much to offer a place mat with a few games or a coloring
page with crayons. Parents will be able to relax as they
wait for their food because their children will be
entertained with these activities. Some restaurants offer
games on the table to where you jump pegs over each other or
you create things out of links. These types of games offer a
fun way for the whole family to spend time together while
they wait for their food.

Make sure you offer plenty of accommodations for children
when it comes to seating as well. Booster seats are the
perfect way for smaller children to be high enough to reach
the table. You also need to have plenty of high chairs
available to meet the demand for them during peak business
hours. Make sure each of the high chairs is in good
condition and has safety buckles that work so the child
isn't at risk of getting hurt.

If you want to keep parents happy enough to keep coming to
your restaurant then you need to offer them a great
establishment for their children. Once a person becomes a
parent they have too many other issues to concern themselves
with when it comes to eating out. The food is no longer the
main focus even though they still want a terrific meal at an
affordable price. They always want an establishment that
allows them to enjoy it with their children
