Does An Old Machine Cost You Sales?

Posted on 2008-Apr-25 at 11:05
If you have been shopping around for vending machines you will see plenty of cosmetic differences in them. Some people have the idea that a vending machine has to be pretty to make money. There are plenty of classic ones still out there that work. One is at our local barber shop and everyone loves it. Of course he buys the kids a drink when they get their hair done so they don't care what it looks like.

You can certainly make money with a plain looking vending machine though. What you will need to do is to compare the numbers. While you may get more sales from the pretty new vending machine with all of the features, how much of it is going to be profit? If it will less profit than you get from the basic looking ones then what is the point? Too many people don't take the time to look at these facts though and that is where they get themselves into trouble.

When there are many vending machines in a given area it does seem like people go to the pretty ones. For example at our local Wal-Mart there must be at least eight of them that sale soda and water when you walk in the door. They have a new one where the soda that is on the front of it is in 3-D so it changes from a closed can to one that is open and refreshing. This is a type of advertising that is getting more sales for that vending machine than those plain ones next to it.

You can be sure these newer looking vending machines will start to crop up all over the place. They are likely being sold as a way to get more sales. Yet you need to be very cautious about falling for this line of talk. There may not be such a connection between the look of a vending machine and the volume of sales. You could just end up spending more money on your equipment going this route.

As a result you may end up struggling to make the kind of profits you need to be successful. If you look at another spin on this, you could now get other models of vending machines for less money. That will increase your profits and that may be the right road for you to take with this type of business.

It comes down to being your decision but don't let the look of it be the only influence of your decision. It could be one you end up regretting in the near future. When you are evaluating the locations to place your vending machines you may want to take a look at what your competition will be. It is best to get a good location where no other vending machines are at. Yet this may not be possible and you can't control someone else wanting to place theirs next to yours later on either.

Do you think you can compete with how they look? Definitely something new to be thinking about in the vending machine business. Of course the goal is to find places to put them that will get plenty of business AND you don't have competition around for it to matter.

You can keep older models of vending machines looking very nice with some routine maintenance. Always have extra bulbs for the lights and make sure everything on it works like it should. When you are ready to upgrade to newer machines you need to really do your homework when it comes to prices and profits. Don't rush into buying what looks appealing or your bottom line could suffer as a result.
