HowTo Start A Business

Location, Location, Location

A successful coffee shop needs the right location in order to make money. This is something you really need to make a priority if you want to operate this type of business. You may have spent time researching equipment, procedures, and even the right suppliers. Yet all that can be in place and still you aren't generating the volume of business you want due to the location not being a good match.

You can't have a successful coffee shop unless people can easily get to it. This means you want to be easily accessible for those that will want coffee on a regular basis. Thing about the economics of the area. Where do most people go to work? What routes will be used to get them there?

Even if you are in a prime part of town, it can still be hard for people to get to your coffee shop. Think about the flow of traffic in that area. If it is difficult to get across the road or to get back into the stream of traffic after getting off them people aren't going to do it. That cup of coffee isn't worth being late to work or stressing out about the traffic day after day.

Don't underestimate the sales you can get from foot traffic as well. Are there many places around the coffee shop where people can walk over and get it during their breaks from work? Convenience is very important to people who try to grab a cup of coffee with limited time to do it in. If you can meet that demand then you will likely have a very successful coffee shop.

Think about the competition you will have in a given area as well. That can be tricky to evaluate. Some customers will give you a try but many will remain loyal to what they already know to be a great coffee shop. People tend to be more comfortable with what is familiar to them. If there are already too coffee shops on the block it is silly to think you can do well there.

If there is another coffee shop just a few blocks away then you will have some competition going on. Some will enjoy that walk to get some exercise as they go after a cup of coffee. Some will try both locations and stick with the one that serves them the best drinks. You want to do all you can though to keep people coming your direction so pay attention to the flow of foot traffic.

If you consider placing your coffee shop into a building that is already there, do your homework. It may be a bad location and several previous businesses have failed there. You don't want to subject yourself to the same fate. Find out why other businesses aren't there. It could be that they grew too big for that size of a building which is a nice indication that you can get the traffic you need there.

There are many issues to take into consideration before you select a coffee shop. The more planning you do initially the better off you will be. Don't put all of your time and effort into opening such a business and then realize it isn't in a good enough location to get the volume of business you need to be a success.
