The Two Basic Medical Insurance Plan Types

Posted on 2007-Dec-11 at 07:17

A Health Maintenance Organization medical
insurance plan is one that is more strictly regulated.
That trade-off is reversed when it comes to HMO
plans.  You are restricted to seeing only those doctors that
are on their list, and need referrals for special
services.

Looking for cheap health insurance would seem to point
you towards an HMO, since these are generally more
affordable. You may want to speak to an insurance
broker to get the help you need in finding the exact
plan that will be best for you. Health insurance for
self employed people is frequently PPO insurance, and
group plans sponsored by employers are usually HMO
plans.   However, it's critical that you select your
insurance plan based primarily on what will serve you
and your family the best.

With this flexibility, of course, comes higher out of
pocket expenses. With a PPO, or Preferred Provider
Organization, you have more flexibility in choosing
the doctors you want, and don't need a referral to see
specialists.  The most basic division between
different types of insurance plans is the one which
separates HMOs from PPOs.

Before you make any decisions about what kind of
medical insurance plan will best meet your needs, be
certain that you fully understand the details of the
insurance game. Finding the right healthcare insurance
for you and your family is extremely important, not
only because you want to save money, but also because
you need to be confident that you'll be well covered
for any future contingency.  Sitting down and
selecting a medical insurance plan is a serious
matter.
