Necktie BasicsApril 28, 2008

Men wear what we know as neckties throughout many parts of the world. The precursors of the modern necktie are believed to have started appearing as early as the late 1500s.

The necktie is considered an important part of the appearance of the person who wears it. Hence it is important to wear a necktie that is clean and works well with the shirt, pants or jacket you are wearing.

When tieing a necktie, the knot that is most commonly used is the four-in-hand. This knot is simple and neat and is widely accepted for dress occasions. The Windsor knot is also a popular knot. Most important is that the knot of a necktie be tied neatly.

It is not uncommon for a man to feel uncomfortable wearing a necktie. Many men dislike the pressure a properly tied necktie puts on their throat. The discomfort though, more often than not, has to do with the size of the shirt they are wearing.

If this is the problem, it is important for a man to make sure his shirt collar isn't too small. When the shirt is the proper size, most of the problems that relate to tightness of the necktie around the neck will disappear.

In many countries the necktie is considered an important part of business dress.
