Selenium

The mineral selenium is available in many different forms as a nutritional supplement today. It is classified as an essential trace mineral in the human body. This nutrient has gained a tremendous amount of recognition over the past ten years, with many studies being performed that show its efficacy. It is an important part of our antioxidant enzyme and immune systems, which protects the cells against the effects of 'free radicals' that are produced during normal oxygen and waste metabolism. Thank goodness the human body is a very adaptive organism! It has developed natural defenses such as an innate antioxidant system that utilizes selenium to help control levels of free radicals because they can damage cells, and contribute to the development of serious disabling diseases. Selenium is also essential for normal functioning of the thyroid gland, which has far reaching ramifications for those who are trying to loose weight. They get caught up in the viscous cycle of binging on junk food that is totally devoid of any real nutrient content, that even further robs their bodies of nutrients like selenium that help to maintain their health and well being.

Deficiencies in this important trace mineral can also lead to severe gastrointestinal disorders, and may lead to further malabsorption complications which results in further selenium depletion and deficiency. These malabsorption complications can lead to a chain of events that spiral into all kinds of gastrointestinal absorption problems that usually affect absorption of other nutrients as well. This kind of degenerative disease process will require routine monitoring of nutritional status so that natural physicians can recommend the appropriate treatment. Celiac's disease and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) are two prime examples of pathologies that may be a combination of a nutrient deficiency, bound to congenital anomalies that create a life time of pain and suffering. Unfortunately, the allopathic medical community doesn't look at this aspect of the disease formation process. And therefore almost all the time medical intervention is all about treating the symptoms, and not the cause.

Many times in the field of medicine that answer is right in front of us, and we can't see it, we offer selenium which can be taken to supplement your diet and any possible lack of this nutrient that may be occurring in your diet.
