24/12/2008 - Necessity of Canvas Priming
You can buy a roll of primed or raw canvas cloth, if you don’t wish to buy any of the pre-fabricated canvases. The initial step for constructing a finished canvas is stretching. After completing the process of stretching, it is very much essential to prime the canvas. By priming a raw canvas, we can avoid rotting of both linen and cotton cloth that occurs when saturated with oil paint. Occurrence of rotting can also be prevented by treating the canvas with glue or gelatin solution and then coating with an oil-based primer.
Following are the steps that should be followed during the process of priming:
1. After stretching process, you should paint the raw canvas or spread a thin layer of glue or gelatin solution on it. Note that not to stretch the raw canvas too much or too tight, because the priming will shrink the canvas cloth and therefore tighten it automatically.
2. Let the fabric dry for few hours. After it dries, a mixture of white lead in oil and turpentine is coated using a wide brush. This will result in a white surface that makes it easier to gauge the colors that we use while painting.
3. Once the canvas is dry, sand it lightly.
4. Then, apply a second coat of the white lead in oil and turpentine solution, and sand the canvas again.
5. All these materials and the accompanying instructions can be bought from an art supply store or on the Internet.
Many of the artists also enjoy working on wood panels made up of oak, poplar and mahogany, which is a proving support for oil painting. Today, wood panels are available in the market ranging from a piece of poplar to plywood to masonite. The latter is increasingly popular because it is inexpensive, durable, and can be cut into virtually any size. You can buy ready made boards or prepare your own. The panel should be primed with gesso before painting. Dilute the gesso by using water, apply it with a wide brush, let it dry and then sand it smooth. Repeat the process two or more times. If you like a slighter rougher tooth, add less water and do not sand the board. You can also choose heavy paper of at least 200 lbs, if you want to make your painting last longer.
This was a short summary about priming. Many new priming techniques are available, but the basic amongst all of them remains the same. It is very much essential to learn priming in order to achieve a wonderful piece of canvas art
