| What could be the largest solar array in Western Colorado is planned near Carbondale, but town officials worry similar projects to reduce the town’s greenhouse gas emissions could mean higher property taxes.
Aspen Skiing Co. will fund a $1 million, 147-kilowatt solar-electric system on approximately one acre of Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s campus.
Ski Company Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Matt Jones said the resort wanted to find a good environmental project to fund, “and this seemed like the right one.”
“It’s expensive and doesn’t have a great return, maybe 6 1/2 percent if all goes well,” he said. “But our owners, the Crown family, said it was important.”
The system would produce approximately 215,000 kilowatt-hours a year, enough for 20 households, according to a land-use application with Garfield County. The project requires county approval because the site is outside town limits. |
