Aspen Skiing Co. will fund a $1 million, 147-kilowatt solar-electric system on approximately one acre of Colorado Rocky Mountain School’s campus.

Ski Company Chief Financial Officer and Vice President Matt Jones said the resort wanted to find a good environmental project to fund, “and this seemed like the right one.”

“It’s expensive and doesn’t have a great return, maybe 6 1/2 percent if all goes well,” he said. “But our owners, the Crown family, said it was important.”

The system would produce approximately 215,000 kilowatt-hours a year, enough for 20 households, according to a land-use application with Garfield County. The project requires county approval because the site is outside town limits.
