| INNER Melbourne would run on renewable energy within a decade under a Greens proposal to fit households with solar hot water systems and put solar panels on public buildings, including the MCG.
The scheme, which the party says would cost just under $2 billion over the decade if taken up by 50 per cent of buildings in the electorate of Melbourne, proposes auditing homes, improving insulation and changing to energy-efficient light bulbs and appliances.
Solar panels would be installed on at least every second building, with low-income households offered means-tested, interest-free loans for the $6000 cost.
Greens candidate for Melbourne Adam Bandt said space on the roof of the MCG would be enough to power the stadium five times over.
Excess energy from homes and businesses would be fed back into the grid, with the balance of power to come from solar sources and wind farms.
Mr Bandt said the scheme would make volunteering houses greenhouse neutral and could be funded with money set aside for the major parties' proposed tax cuts. Government loans for solar panels and hot water systems would be repaid through savings from cheaper energy bills, he said. |
