What I'm about to tell you is completely true: to pack for the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada this week I jammed six chargers, two cell phones, a camera, video camera, laptop, voice recorder and two microphones into my backpack.
I also brought a power bar, so that I could charge all my equipment at night.
But a small company out of New York called Voltaic said their product could change my whole work experience...and make me a touch more environmentally friendly.
The products this company markets are solar-powered bags that contain custom made batteries to store power and work as a charger for most electronics.
One reviewer called it a "backpack on steroids."
The backpack, which can hold four watts of solar power, includes 11 adaptors for different electronics and has 30 litres of storage.
After six hours in the sun, the lithium ion battery can charge a cell phone about three times. After one hour in the sun, the pack will power over three hours of iPod play. The bag costs about $249 USD.
That bag has been on the market for about three years, so this year Voltaic released a new solar bag: the Generator.
This bag uses one solar panel to produce up to 14.7 watts of power, which they say is enough to fully charge a typical laptop after a full day of sunlight.
This laptop bag retails for $599 USD, and just like the other bags, the fabric is made out of recycled soda bottles.
Representatives from the company said after 10 hours in the sun, the bag would fully charge my laptop.
These bags, they say, are perfect for people with multiple chargers - but they are also great for camping, student-life, and even scientists on expedition.
There is no doubt the bag cuts down on cords and can provide an environmentally friendly option, but there is one problem: most people visiting CES this week never saw the sun for more than a few minutes at a time.
So to change the way we power up our gadgets, we also are going to have to change the way we spend our days. |
