Best Diet Food Allergies

Posted on 2007-Nov-30 at 06:34
The best diet food allergies sufferers should use is one that is customized for their specific diet needs. What will work for one person may not work for another. There are many foods that may cause allergic reactions. However, there are eight specific foods identified by the FDA that are the most highly allergic foods. They are, in no specific order, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, tree nuts, peanuts, fish and shellfish. There are certainly other foods that may trigger allergies but these happen to be the most likely to do so. Out of all the foods listed peanut allergies tend to be the most dangerous and shellfish allergies tend to be the most common among adults.

When you suspect that you have a food allergy, you will need to obtain a diagnosis from a board certified allergist. There are certain tests such as skin prick tests and blood tests that can be performed. These tests can help determine whether or not your problem is actual food allergy. There is a difference between food allergy, food intolerance, and food insensitivity. Just because a certain food gives you gastrointestinal upset, for example, does not mean you are allergic to it. Many people are lactose intolerant but that doesn't mean they are allergic to dairy.

After your allergist runs the proper tests and reaches a food allergy diagnosis, the best thing to do from that point on is avoid the offending food. You may think that this requires lots of deprivation, but in fact there are tons of great recipes and foods that you can enjoy. If you are allergic to flour, for example, you can certainly enjoy flourless cakes and cookies. If you are allergic to eggs, there are egg substitutes that taste like the real thing. For those allergic to milk, soy milk makes a great substitute and does not contain dairy.

The best diet food allergies sufferers should go on is one that takes their needs into consideration yet does not deprive them of things they like to eat. You may want to work with a dietician or nutritionist to create a diet plan that works with your preferences and needs. Also, you may want to check out some of the fantastic cookbooks written especially for those with food allergies. Here are two examples: The Food Allergy News Cookbook by Anne Munoz-Furlong and The Food Allergy Cookbook by Lucinda Bruce-Gardyne.

Cheers :)
