St. George was first established in the 1860’s by a group of Mormon settlers. These people settled here in St. George hoping to grow cotton. The cotton farms did not really take to well to the climate and the idea was abandoned but the settlers stayed on in St. George making it their home.
St, George offers a desert climate and has the warmest temperatures in the state of Utah. The average summer temperature in July is around 102 degrees during the day and then it cools off dramatically during the night. Being in the southwest region of the state St. George lays on the northeastern edge of the Mojave Desert. The average rainfall in St. George is around 8.27 inches of rain a year. This makes the area surrounded by mountains.
These beautiful red cliff mountains are what give St. George some of its natural beauty. St. George offers many hiking trails throughout its own Snow Canyon National Park. There are also plenty of trails for bikers to ride on for hours upon hours. St. George natives are generally people who enjoy the out doors. St. George offers many things to do for entertainment and also is very close to many things. Las Vegas is only 119 miles from the city and the casino town of Mesquite is only about 45 minutes to an hour away. The city has much to offer to people who settle here. St. George may be growing but it still has a small town feel to it. People still wave to each other and talk to their neighbors frequently. This home town feel is what draws many people to the city and is what makes them want to raise a family here.
With the growth of the city growing so rapidly the town at first struggled to keep up. Now the city has projects to widen popular roads and a new airport is scheduled to open in the year 2010. There are also new schools being built in the area to support all the students it has.
