The Federal Correctional Institution in Milan is an old prison located about 25 miles south of Detroit. It is rated as a low-security institution and was opened in the 1930s. The facility is enclosed with doublewide fences that surround the entire perimeter of the buildings. Between the two fences, coils of razor wire are stacked atop each other to discourage escape attempts. Razor wire is also woven through the tops of each fence.

Besides the low-security prison that confines inmates who are serving sentences with release dates of up to 20 years in the future, there is an adjacent administrative facility that holds inmates who are in a pretrial status. Inmates in the administrative unit are facing federal criminal indictments, but most have not yet been convicted. They await release on bond or they await the conclusion of their criminal proceedings. Some are awaiting transfer to more permanent prisons.

The Federal Prison Camp in Yankton opened in 1988. It is located in southeastern South Dakota, 60 miles northwest of Sioux City, Iowa. Inmates who serve time in Yankton will enjoy an open atmosphere that differs from most federal prisons. The reason Yankton differs is that the architects who designed the place did not have a prison in mind. Prior to confining inmates convicted of federal criminal indictment, the Yankton prison camp was a college campus.

The prison camp does not have a fence or any obtrusive security devices. The men serve time at Yankton camp on their own honor. Many of the individuals self-surrender to the prison, and others hold jobs while they're serving time that allow them to interact with the broader community.

The federal prison in Sandstone is a low-security institution. It is old, as the buildings began receiving prisoners in 1939. Now the prison confines about 1,000 prisoners and it is crowded. Prisoners are assigned to dormitory style living, but with so many men in the population, staff members now assign them to sleep on metal bunk beds in common areas as well as rooms that were designed for sleeping.

FCI Sandstone prison is located in a cold part of the country, a couple of hours away from the Twin Cities. Because of the cold weather, many activities are designed for indoors. There is an excellent gymnasium with basketball courts and machines for both strength training and aerobic exercise.

The Federal Medical Center Rochester is located near downtown Rochester. It is different from most federal prisons in that the inmates who are confined there, for the most part, are undergoing some type of medical care. Some are there for mental health treatment while others serve time there as they undergo aftercare from major surgeries.

Whereas most federal prisons have a heavy concentration on security, at FMC Rochester the atmosphere is more like a hospital. All of the inmates will have been convicted of crimes, most followed federal criminal indictments. Yet rather than serving time with individuals who are from similar security classifications, the inmates at FMC Rochester will be serving time for any type of offense. People who were convicted of having participated in organized crime will share space alongside inmates who are serving time for mail fraud.

The federal prison in Springfield is very much like a hospital. It holds more than 1000 prisoners who come from every region of the United States. The Springfield Medical Center employs more than one hundred medical professionals. This includes physicians, surgeons, dentists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and nurses. With that highly educated staff, the prisoners in Springfield live with less of the condescension that exists in most federal prisons.

The purpose of the Springfield Medical Center is to provide inmates with medical care of all sorts. Prisoners from all across the country, whether they are white collar crime prisoners or whether they are serving time for murder, transfer to Springfield when administrators approve them for major surgery or the need for rehabilitative medical care. Those who serve portions of their sentences at the Springfield Medical Center are grateful for the care and medical attention they receive while there.
