2008-Feb-20 - Going Natural in Treating Tinnitus

Natural Treatments for Tinnitus

Before trying out commercially available treatments for ringing in the ears, it is recommended that sufferers use natural treatments for tinnitus first. These treatments are practical, so you do not have to worry about not being able to maintain them. They can be as basic as not exposing your ears to loud noises and assessing your diet.

Tinnitus can be triggered by certain agents such as nicotine, alcohol, salty foods, cheese and chocolate. So this would mean that sufferers may have to watch the kinds of food that they eat, and those who smoke may have to quit smoking. One thing you should consider is that your diet should be rich in protein, zinc, choline, and the vitamins A, B, and E. Furthermore, you might have known that ringing in the ears can be caused by certain conditions that involve blood circulation such as hypertension, anemia, and atherosclerosis. Thus, doing proper exercise and having your blood pressure checked would help reduce the ringing in your ears.

Speaking of basic and practical, natural treatments for tinnitus can be done by staying away from places where you will be exposed to loud noise. Or if it cannot be avoided, you should wear hearing protection devices such as earplugs and special earmuffs. The use of herbal and homeopathic tinnitus remedies are also considered natural, for the substances used in preparing them are derived from nature. Also, they have no side effects, which is in contrast to some conventional drugs.

But among the natural tinnitus treatments, the best treatment is not to get stressed and frustrated. Treatments may take some time to take effect, so patience is a requirement here, although the sufferers are advised to try out the commercially available treatments if they do not see signs of improvements after using the natural ones for some time. Remember that stress worsens tinnitus, and treatments would be of no use if the help does not come from ourselves.

Homeopathy is another form of natural treatment for tinnitus which has also gained a worldwide acceptance. The use of the law of similars and potentization in homeopathy has been proven to produce a highly effective medicine. If you spend any time doing research about tinnitus and how best to treat it, you are sure to find that there is simply no easy way to get rid of it. There are no conventional prescription medications for tinnitus, at least none that work and that is the reason most people are turning to natural tinnitus remedies in an effort to find some tinnitus relief.

homeopathic tinnitus remedyThe main problem found using conventional medications to relieve or treat tinnitus is that they are aimed at curing the symptoms of tinnitus i.e. the ringing in the ears, instead of treating the causes of tinnitus.
This is problematical because tinnitus can be caused by a host of conditions and it is for this reason that there is simply no conventional cure for tinnitus.

The best cure for tinnitus is most certainly to use a natural remedy for tinnitus in conjunction with a change in lifestyle  so that the condition or circumstance that caused the tinnitus in the first place are also addressed.

2007-Nov-9 - Tinnitus Question

Posted in Tinnitus
My mother recently complained of a hissing noise in the ear and when she went to see her doctor she was told to have a condition called tinnitus. What is that all about? Is it in any way dangerous?

Tinnitus is a ringing in the ear and it is a symptom of disease.  There must be a problem with your mother’s ear that might cause the tinnitus. Tinnitus sounds are said to be a result of our brain creating false sounds since the ear is not able to perceive outside sound and send it to the brain for interpretation.

No it’s not dangerous.  Tinnitus is not a terminal disease but it can truly affect your mom since tinnitus sounds would really be bothersome for some people.

Tinnitus may be caused by several factors.  Does your mother have partial hearing loss? Did she take some drugs prior to having that condition? FYI there are several drugs out there that can cause tinnitus so it’s best to read the drug literature of the medicines we are taking and take precautionary measures.

Well if you ask me, some tinnitus can be caused by tumors so my answer to your second question would be a yes.  It’s not that I am scaring you or something.  I am just being realistic here.  Maybe to address your query you will need to ask her physician about that. I’m hoping its nothing serious for your mom.

Ears Ringing

Presbycusis among the older generation and exposure to loud noise among the younger generation causes ears ringing.  These are the two most common causes of ringing in the ears now-a-days.

Presbycusis among the older generation isn’t that alarming because it is a known fact that as a person grows older, hearing problems arises because of the degeneration of the hair cells.  What is alarming is the sudden rise of incidence of hearing loss among the younger generation.  They put the blame to their exposure to loud noise or music.

They usually find out about it only when they already have a mild hearing loss.  This is the big problem because they continue to expose their ears when they listen to extremely loud music.  By the time they discover that the loud music is damaging their hearing, it is already too late and there is nothing more that can be done to save them from having hearing loss.

There is an urgent need to have information dissemination so as to inform those who love listening to music of the dangers that listening to loud music can do to their ears.  It has always been a misconception that your ears will in time become immune to loud music as you continuously expose it.

The reality is that the more you expose your ears, the more you put your ears to danger and the possibility of having your ears ringing

Where To Find Pure White Noise

White noise is often touted as a remedy for sleeplessness, lack of concentration, or tinnitus.  Much of what we consider white noise, though, is only an approximation of white noise. To find pure white noise, we must be a little more discerning.

Noises in the everyday world are often thought of as white noise.  A fan running, the sound of the wind rushing by an open car window as you drive down the road, the sound of rain coming down on the roof and windows are all examples of noises people think of as white noise.  These are not actually pure white noise at all.

Pure white noise is only produced when all the frequencies between about 20 Hz and 20 kHz are emitted together.  That means all of the tones that the ear can hear must be played at once.  Otherwise, you just have something that sounds something like white noise but isn’t really pure white noise.

This pseudo pure white noise can be somewhat effective at easing the roaring and buzzing ear noises of tinnitus.  It may work well for some.  But, it is not steady or convenient.  It isn’t quite as successful at masking tinnitus noises as the real pure white noise is.

Pure white noise can only be obtained by manufacturing it.  While other sounds may have many audible frequencies, only manufactured noise can have them all.  This is done digitally to insure that all the frequencies in the audible range are included.

Sound conditioners are often used to produce pure white noise.  These machines emit a noise that sounds like a wind or a fan, but actually contains all the necessary frequencies.  They are available through home medical supply companies and catalog stores.  They usually cost a few hundred dollars.  Sound generators which can be worn like hearing aids can also play pure white noise.  These, however, are more expensive.

White noise CD can be obtained through the mail, in stores, or over the internet.  These are recorded from synthesized sound so that, for the length of the CD, there is no looping (repeating).  They are very inexpensive, typically running you about $20.  Then all you need is an ordinary CD player to use them with.

Noise that is nearly white noise is easy to find.  Just listen around your house or yard.  You will probably find some sound that will block the annoying ear noises of your tinnitus to some degree.  However, if you want the effectiveness of pure white noise, you’ll probably have to go shopping for it.

2007-Aug-26 - Exposure To Loud Noise Can Lead To Premature Death

Posted in Tinnitus
A startling new report just released by the World Health Organisation warns that continual exposure to excessive loud noises such as traffic noise or night-time noise can result in premature death due to heart disease.

This follows an extensive study they undertook in Europe and the UK which found that up to 3% of deaths from heart disease deaths were as a result of exposure to chronic excessive exposure to noise. This has enormous implications for tinnitus sufferers and confirms the findings Ellen Currie reported in her recent book Living Tinnitus Free.

The study found that it is the increased levels of stress hormones in the body due to the exposure to noise that is responsible for strokes and the premature deaths.

How To Recognize Tinnitus Symptoms

Many of us have a loved one who has hearing loss and  tinnitus.  Perhaps an older family member, perhaps a younger one lives with it.  Although tinnitus occurs often with hearing loss, it also occurs without it.  So, everyone can benefit from recognizing tinnitus symptoms.

Tinnitus symptoms are characterized by sound that comes from within the ear.  All kinds of ear noises have been attributed to tinnitus.  The sounds could be like buzzing or whirring.  They could be whistling or hissing.  Some people even report sounds like Morse code or beeping.  The most common description is ringing in the ears.   This inner noise, whatever it sounds like, underlies every outside sound the person hears.

Tinnitus symptoms may be tonal or pulsate.  Tonal sounds are steady ringing in the ears, for example.  Pulsate sounds usually vibrate with the beat of the person’s heart.  Usually, tinnitus symptoms occur in both ears.  Occasionally, though, the buzzing or ringing occurs in only one ear.  This is not only rarer; it is usually more serious as well.

The sounds attributed to tinnitus symptoms may be very soft, almost like a whispering in the ear.  They may, on the other hand, be so loud as to be incapacitating.  They can affect a person’s sleep patterns.  They can also make it very difficult, if not impossible, to concentrate.

The sounds may come on only once or for a few days or weeks.  Sometimes, unfortunately, the condition is permanent.  Hearing loss associated with tinnitus symptoms can come and go, or it may be a permanent condition, as well.  If the hearing loss is permanent, the tinnitus probably will be permanent also.

There are other tinnitus symptoms to consider, if they go along with ear noises.  Dizziness is one.  This is an important one because it may indicate the presence of another condition, such as Meniere’s disease, as well.    Some tinnitus sufferers experience headaches.  This is understandable, given the constant noise accosting their ears.  Most feel a sense of pressure or fullness in their ears.  Some even feel pain in their ears.  One thing to check is to see if the person has a buildup of earwax in their ears.  This can cause other tinnitus symptoms, too.

If you have other symptoms besides ear noises, it might be wise to confirm the diagnosis with a physician.  Many of the tinnitus symptoms, after all, are common to other conditions as well.  Tinnitus symptoms are easy to recognize.  It mainly takes common sense.  If your ears are delivering noises to your brain that you know aren’t coming from the outside world, you probably have tinnitus.

2007-Aug-3 - What Is Tinnitus

Posted in Tinnitus
What is tinnitus

Tinnitus is noise that originates within the ear rather than from the outside environment.  Tinnitus is typically not a serious condition; however, it is frequently accompanied by hearing loss.  There are several common types of tinnitus: Tonal tinnitus is often called "ringing in the ears.

Objective tinnitus is a much rarer form of tinnitus and consists of head noises that are audible to other people in addition to the sufferer.  Tinnitus is experienced by most people at some time in their lives, but some 17% of the general population suffer quite severely from this condition.

Hearing loss, hyperacusis, recruitment, FMS, and balance problems may or may not be present in conjunction with tinnitus.  Hearing loss, or deafness, is the partial or total inability to hear sound in one or both ears.  Hearing loss due to exposure to loud noise can also accompany Tinnitus.

Noise is the major cause for Tinnitus, Vertigo, Jet Leg and other psychosomatic diseases (even a specific type of cancer was found as caused by noise).  Noise is the most common occupational disease and the second most self-reported occupational injury.  Noise pollution found in the work place and in recreational activitesi.  Noises appear to arise in the ears or inside the head and may be experienced all of the time, or only intermittently.

Treatment will be quite different in each case of tinnitus.  Treatment of the causes of tinnitus means treating the symptom tinnitus.  Treatment for tinnitus may include directive counselling, tinnitus retraining therapy, masking or use of hearing aids to reduce the effects of hearing loss.  Treatments of tinnitus which involve changes in behaviour entail becoming aware of how one reacts to tinnitus, or of how one's lifestyle encourages it.

The sounds have been described variously as a "ringing" sound, a "buzzing" sound, a "humming noise, "like running water", a "whistling" sound or like the "sound from a seashell held close to the ear.  Less common tinnitus, in which the sounds are described as beeping, Morse code type of signals, or even a musical notes.  The maskability of tinnitus measures the degree to which tinnitus may be covered up or "masked" by other external sounds.

Tinnitus is very common in people of all ages and so it's important to realise that you are not alone.  Tinnitus is not a disease, but it can be caused by exposure to loud sounds, middle or inner ear infections, tumors on the hearing nerve, and even wax on the eardrum.

2007-Aug-2 - Tinnitus Relief Remedy

Having Tinnitus Is Like Having a Bell Around Your Neck

Tinnitus is one of those conditions that you would not want to try experiencing for the simple reason that it is such an unpleasant experience.  Would you want a ringing in your ears?  Having tinnitus is like walking around with a bell hanging around your neck that keeps on ringing in your ears.

But what can be done if you are placed in a situation that you already have the ringing in the ears?  Well some physicians would deliver the classic line of “sorry but there is nothing that we can do with your tinnitus”.  Such disappointing news to hear for somebody who is already depressed because of the tinnitus sounds.  What most physicians fail to inform their patients with tinnitus is that there is an available tinnitus relief remedy although it is a natural tinnitus remedy and not conventional medicines.

For those who seek relief from the constant ringing sound in the ears that tinnitus brings there are numerous options.  But before trying to do such selection, it is essential that the cause of the tinnitus in the person must first be identified.  Knowing the cause helps a lot in selecting the right tinnitus relief or remedy that would fit for the type of tinnitus that a person has.  Partial and complete hearing loss has always been commonly identified as a cause of tinnitus.  There can be various reasons why a person could have partial or complete hearing loss.  A plain presence of impacted ear wax that might cover the ears can cause hearing loss and will directly cause tinnitus.  Such problem can be tackled by having an audiologist remove the ear wax.  Remember that self removal of the ear wax can be dangerous.

Take note that loud noises, and this includes loud music too, can damage our hearing.  So we must always try to protect our ears from too much loud noise.  We must stay away from loud speakers in disco halls and as much as possible we must avoid using earphones when listening to music.  The problem with using earphones is that most listeners tend to forget that the music they are listening too is already way too loud that the people around them can even hear the music they are playing.

There are homeopathic remedies for tinnitus that sufferers can use.  All they have to do is consult a homeopath who can guide them properly for the right homeopathic remedy to choose.  Maskers are also used by most tinnitus sufferers as tinnitus relief or remedy to help them sleep or just for relaxation purposes.

Tinnitus Explained

Tinnitus is often misinterpreted as something that is threatening.  This is because the ringing in the ears can cause panic in the person having the tinnitus especially if the noises are exceptionally loud.  It will help calm a person who has tinnitus when the cause and reason behind the tinnitus is explained.

Tinnitus is a symptom that is characterized by a ringing in the ears.  It may happen in one or both ears.  The ringing noise may be constant or intermittent and it can be mild or loud.  Having tinnitus means there is a medical problem in the ears or head.  Tinnitus causes are ear wax impaction, ear infections, ototoxic drugs, menieres disease, head injuries, tumors, loud noises, presbycusis, lyme disease and stress.

When you hear an abnormal sound in the ears that you alone can hear it is called tinnitus.  Explained as the perception of a sound in the ears in the absence of an actual external stimulus, tinnitus sounds are usually described as buzzing, ringing, swooshing, hissing, ticking, roaring and cicadas.

The American Tinnitus Association reports than an estimated 66 million Americans are affected with tinnitus.  It can affect both men and women and it affects both the young and old.  Hearing loss related to old age is the common cause of tinnitus among the old while exposure to loud music is the culprit among the young.  Not so long ago, tinnitus was only predominant among the older generation.  But technology has caused the statistics to change.  The younger generation is catching up and this is mainly because of their fondness of listening to portable music players at high volumes.

It is alarming to know that hearing loss due to loud noise/music has affected quite a large number of the young generation.  Most of them are not aware of the harm that they are causing their ears when they continuously listen to music at high volumes.  Constant exposure of ones ears to loud music can damage the hair cells and eventually lead to an irreversible hearing loss.

The treatment for tinnitus will depend on what caused the tinnitus.  There are natural treatments for tinnitus and homeopathic remedy is one of the popular forms of treatment for tinnitus.  Explained as a treatment that is based on the symptoms of the disease, homeopathy is a widely accepted form of treatment for different types of diseases and is practiced in many countries around the world.
