It’s sometimes a very difficult decision when it comes to getting rid of your old car. Do you sell it, junk it and make some money, do you continue to hold on to it, or should you donate it? Did you notice how I have listed donate it last? This was not by accident, this is because most people don’t even consider this option for some reason. The first thing people think of is to sell it or junk it to make a couple hundred dollars. While there is nothing wrong with that, there is another option and that is to donate your car to a charity that will give you a tax right off. No it won’t be cash in your pocket right at that moment, but it will definitely help later during tax season.
There are many different reasons why you should donate that car that you haven’t been using. There are so many people in need of help, and you can provide them with the necessary transportation that has left them unable to find a job so that they can provide for their family. Thing happen throughout all of our lives, and many times we are not able to prevent them from happening. Maybe you have lost your job, and were unable to find another one for an extended period of time, but with the help of your family or friends you got through it. Unfortunately not everyone has that type of support system, and this is the main reason that charities exist.
There are so many different organizations that will accept donations of cars and trucks, some will even take recreational vehicles, boats and even trailers. When you donate these you are helping them to provide the necessary assistance and care to many different people with various hardships.
If donating your unwanted car sounds to difficult for you to do, you are wrong. Each organization makes it as simple as pie for you to donate your car. They do all of the work – they will arrange to tow your car away and sell it to a third party or use it. But you do absolutely nothing at all but make a phone call. What can be easier than this? Nothing at all.
I understand that you may be saying to yourself right now, that you can sell it and actually make money or trade it for a new car. And you are absolutely correct. But why? Think of the amount you would get for your car from a private sale, or by trading it in. It’s not going to be anything compared to what you can make by donating it. When you donate your car they will give you the book value of your car no matter what condition it is in. So if the Kelly Book Value is $1000 then that is what you get to right off for your taxes. There is no way that you are going to get that by selling it on your own, especially if the car is not working to it’s best capabilities.
Let’s not forget that when you donate your car you are also giving someone a chance to better their situation they are currently in. And there is nothing more rewarding then helping someone that is in need of help. Wouldn’t you hope that you would get that kind of help if the tables were turned. I know that I would.
So before you decide to put a for sale sign on that car you should look into one of the many charities that accept car donations. You will be helping yourself to a nice tax deduction and helping a family that needs your help.
