It’s probably already happened to you at least once, and if it hasn’t happened to you as of this moment, then you can bet that at some point you are going to need your car to be towed away. There are so many different types of situations that can occur when you are driving, even if your car is brand new. Your battery can die, your engine can cease, your starter can go, and this list can continue on and on. It’s part of owning a car and I can tell you from first hand experience that it’s no picnic when it happens. And it always seems to happen at the most inopportune time, like when you are already 10 minutes late for work.
Do you know what you would do if you ever broke down on the side of the road for one reason or another? Maybe your car is overheating, or the fan belt broke, no matter what the cause is, do you know what you would do? Let’s say, Heaven forbid that all of a sudden your car dies and it won’t start up again. All you hear is the attempt but it never turns over. And you are now stuck in the middle of the road with a line of cars behind you, what are your options? Do you have any idea what you would do in this situation, because I sure as hell didn’t.
Let me tell you what happened to me, and hopefully you can learn from my mistake,
I will never forget that dreadful day when I was stuck in the middle lane of a major highway, and nobody even stopped to help me. It was one of the scariest days. I was praying that someone would stop and help me move my car off of the road but they didn’t. Finally a cop came by and he called a tow company to come and tow my car away. I spent about 45 minutes hoping that my car wouldn’t be hit. My brother once told me to make sure I had flares in my car as well as a tow company’s number handy. You don’t know how bad he reamed me for that. Boy did I learn my lesson. I now have two different towing companies numbers for the different counties that I travel through daily, and I put a rescue car kit in my car just in case. I never want to be unprepared like I was.
The police officer that stopped to help me was explaining to me how many cars break down on the road and how so many people just leave it there for weeks on end. This is only causes tickets to pile up, and then it finally gets towed away at the owner’s expense and impounded. So you will have a towing bill, and you will also be required to pay the impound to get your car back. What an absolute waste of money that could have been prevented.
It’s important that you are as prepared as you can be for this most unfortunate scenario. It will help to make this horrible situation a bit easier. No matter what it’s going to cost you money, but when you know that if you leave your car on the side of the road it can end up costing you much more than it should have.
Always have a number for a tow truck handy, and it won’t hurt to have some flares so if it happens at night you can place them around your car so it will not get hit by another car.
