Crowd control at tradeshows

Posted on 2007-Nov-20 at 03:00

One very important factor when doing a tradeshow of any kind is the safety aspect and crowd control.  Crowd control during tradeshows or any other kind of gathering where there are many people is always something that every organizer worries about.  Crowd control and safety is something that everyone that works a show should be aware of.

Barricades and stanchions are things that tradeshows use as tools for crowd control and safety.  These can literally be life saving tools when they are used properly.  Simply by having these items and using them you can stop someone from entering a dangerous area or a place where they are not supposed to be.  There are a lot of dangerous areas at tradeshows and concerts.  There are many areas that are back stage and that have plenty of wires and all kinds of electrical boxes.  There are also places where there are “holes” in the floor or stairs that go down or even just drop offs that a person can get seriously injured on.  By using stanchions and barricades as an organizer of a show you can save people’s lives and also save your self from a law suit if someone got hurt.

Stanchions that are used for crowd control are also a very important factor of safety at tradeshows.  This is because a trade show will usually attract a lot of people and crowds can have their own safety hazards within themselves.  Crowds have what is sometimes referred to as crowd mentality.  An example of this crowd mentality would be if the crowd starts to move right then everyone moves right, if the crowd moves left then everyone moves left and even worse if the crowd starts to run away then everyone runs away.  These kinds of movements that are made by crowds can be deadly at times.  If the majority of the crowd or even just a few of the crowd get spooked for some reason and start running towards an exit then so will everyone else.  They may not even know why they are running but they will.  So a whole group of people that are moving in one direction can actually cause a lot of damage, both to people and to property.

Organizers do not want any kind of stampedes happening at their events and so they try to use stanchions as ways to help with keeping people in organized lines instead of one mass group of people.  This helps to create some order.  Stanchions will create what are known as corrals and will help to keep people in an organized line and not in a crowd of people where everyone is pushing to be first.  You have seen these stanchions when ever you go to events.  They are what make the lines already formed when waiting in line to buy tickets to the event.

Keeping the crowd of people organized and calm can really be the answer to many safety questions.  Crowd control is a very, very important factor and no show organizer can ever forget about crowd control or neglect it and just hope that everything works out alright at the event.  An organizer that just left things like safety up to chance would soon be an event organizer that was out of work and probably one with a law suit on their hands.

Using tools such as stanchions and barricades will help to keep everyone both that are attending and also working the tradeshow or the event safe.  With a little bit of common sense and the use of these tools an organizer can at least feel like they have done everything they can do to keep the people at their event safe.
