More About the Federal Detention Center Miami

Michael Santos was confined to FDC Miami for brief period during his 12th year of confinement.  He writes that he did not like the experience, as he missed the relative freedom that was part of confinement in a regular federal prison. "Living in the FDC is like living in a concrete shell."

At FDC Miami, there is little access to fresh air, despite a recreation deck with high walls and openings in the walls. Those who are confined to BOP's Federal Detention Center Miami may take comfort in knowing that they will eventually transfer to a more open federal prison, or better yet, that they will be released to their family and communities.

Approximately 1,500 prisoners, both men and women, are assigned to the housing units at FDC Miami. Most are awaiting bond hearings, the conclusion of their criminal proceedings, or transfer to more permanent facilities. The normal length of stay at FDC Miami may range from a few days to several years, though I would estimate that the more normal range is between four and ten months.
