The detention center exists to hold individuals who are facing federal criminal indictments for any variety of offenses. Prisoners are held in the MDC while they await release on bond, the conclusion of their criminal proceedings, or transfer to a more permanent prison within the Federal Bureau of Prisons.While in the Los Angeles Detention Center, inmates will mix with offenders who are being charged with many different types of crimes, running the spectrum from tax evasion to murder. Because of that, staff members impose a strict security. Accordingly, there are limitations to all programs, including visiting and education. Few opportunities to work are available to the holdover population. Michael Santos provides a detailed description of the Los Angeles Detention center. To pass the time, I read extensively, prayed, and focused on strategies that I could implement to advance myself for a better life upon release. That time in the detention center can be among the most stressful, as an individual doesn't really know the ways in which his life is about to change.
