An underground tunnel connects the detention center to the courthouse, and inmates who are confined there due to a criminal indictment walk through the tunnel to reach the courthouse for criminal proceedings.Michael Santos served time in a detention center like MCC San Diego during the first months of his confinement, back in 1987. The time was stressful because while he was in the pretrial and holdover status, he did not know what to expect. He writes that he was struggling with the initial separation from family and community, and the anxiety that came with the possible sanction. In his case, those sanctions were severe. Worse, while in the detention center he was exposed for the first time to the complications of sharing small spaces with absolute strangers. It was very stressful.
