Life at Florence Federal Correctional Complex

Located in Colorade, FCC Florence is a Federal Correctional Complex. That means several prisons of different security levels operate under the direction of a single warden and several associate wardens. The complex opened in the early 1990s. That said, the four prisons at Florence are relatively new and well maintained, especially as compared to some of the older facilities in the Bureau of Prisons that were built more than 50 years ago.

In 2003, Michael Santos, prisoner, was transferred from a low-security facility in Fort Dix to the minimum-security camp at Florence. He writes about his experiences at the camp which held offenders who were convicted of white collar crime and nonviolent drug offenses. During the 18 months Michael served at Florence Camp, he became somewhat familiar with operations at the adjacent medium-security prison, the nearby United States Penitentiary, and the Administrative Maximum penitentiary known as the ADX supermax prison Florence.  Michael describes aspects of life at Florence Federal Correctional Complex.
