Brooklyn Detention Center

The Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn is located in Sunset Park, in the downtown section of Brooklyn. It sits adjacent to the federal courthouse for the Eastern District of New York. The purpose of the building is to detain individuals charged with federal criminal indictments, or convicted individuals who are awaiting transfer to more permanent prisons.

Most of the inmates confined at the MDC Brooklyn only stay there for a relatively brief portion of their imprisonment. They either spend a few days as they await release on bond. Others may spend on average of between four and ten months while they wait for their criminal proceedings to conclude. A relatively small portion spends a few years in MDC Brooklyn as they litigate their way through complicated criminal proceedings.
