FDC Houston - A Detention Center

The Federal Detention Center in Houston is located in downtown Houston, at the intersection of Texas Avenue and San Jacinto Streets. It is a high-rise building that holds more than 1,000 prisoners, both male and female. The prisoners in FDC Houston are awaiting outcomes of federal criminal indictments or in transit as they travel from one federal prison to another.

Those being held in the Federal Detention Center in Houston are being held for relatively short periods. Once the inmate receives a bond, or once the criminal justice proceedings conclude, the individual will either be released or move on to a regular prison. While in the detention center, the prisoners will live under tightly controlled conditions. They will not have much freedom of movement, nor will they have much access to fresh, open air. Life in the Federal Detention Center can be stressful and suffocating, like living in a concrete shell.
