FCC Coleman - A Correctional Complex in Florida

The Federal Correctional Complex at Coleman is a massive compound of several federal prisons. It is located in central Florida, about 50 miles northwest of Orlando, and 60 miles northeast of Tampa. The first prison in Coleman opened in 1995, but since then there have been others opened on the same grounds. All together, the prisons at Coleman confine approximately 7,000 federal prisons of every security level.

Because all of the prisons were built in the mid-1990s or later, they are modern facilities by the Federal Bureau of Prisons standards. Two separate United States Penitentiaries hold approximately 3,000 prisoners who have been convicted of violent felonies or who are serving sentences as long as multiple life terms. A medium security prison holds almost 2,000 more prisoners mainly convicted of drug offenses. A low-security prison on the same complex holds about 2,000 prisoners who also serve time, for the most part, for drug convictions and who have release dates within 20 years. There is also a minimum-security camp that keeps about 500 female prisoners within its boundaries.
