Web Design blunders and how to avoid them… - Posted at 06:01 on 2008-Jan-15 by Duncan Carver

First let’s start with your web design idea or purpose of your website basically what do you want your web site to do…

Web design blunder number one…Letting your web designer make your website decisions.

Do you want your web design to be just like a flyer or a brochure, like an extension of your business card. I hope not…most people make these mistakes. Or how about all that really cool flash animation and all those .jpegs (pictures). NO WAY! If you listen to most web designers all they want to do is show off what they paid so much money to learn in school. That is not going to make you any money but it can cost a heck a of a lot.

Web design number two is making your web pages take forever to load.

Don’t get me wrong pictures are needed some times but they most be put in the correct place. You can’t have your website take forever to load up (to open). If someone found your website by clicking a link aka surfing the web or by search engines that means they are actively searching for something that just might happen to be on your site.

If you web design causes your website to take a decade to load up then you bet your bottom dollar that person will just click away and go to the next webpage. More on that later for now let’s get back to what you want to do with your website.

Web design blunder number three is not having a clear action for your traffic to take.

Do you want your website to capture leads so you can follow up with your prospects? What about just getting your prospects email so you can follow up with a newsletter or a 7 day email course? Maybe you want to directly sell your product or service to your prospects.

You must have your traffic do one thing and one thing only you cant have a bunch of links sending them to do a million different things. They come to your website and you guide them like a smart bomb to take the action you want them to take.

Blunder number four is having small text and large text in different fonts and different sizes.

Some people just surf the web and copy and past what they like and put it into dreamweaver or frontpage and make a web page. Not only will this show how un professional you are but it is illegal to just steal copy right information.

Blunder number five is not compressing the graphics.

You get software that will compress the graphics so they load quicker if you remember slow loading pages is another huge blunder we already discussed in the beginning of the article. You can google search for any graphic compressor and see for your self what you like.

Blunder number six is not search engine optimizing your website.

Most of your traffic should come from search engines and other web sites. If you don’t set up your web design to be search engine friendly then you will be missing out on the lifeline of your business. Free traffic and trust me when you have to pay for traffic that comes along with a ton of other blunders that I will cover in a different article.

Blunder number seven is not having repeat traffic models built in.

For example a blog is an amazing tool and it’s free. You want people to come back to your site because repeat traffic is the key to making money. So you need to make your site very sticky. You can put up a forum to talk about your latest newsletter issue or use the blog to post your newsletter issue and have people leave comments.

I hope this helps guide you in the correct direction.
